Jessie Magdaleno vs Yenifel Vicente Preview

No one can say that Magdaleno was given anything on his way to the top of the contenders list. Magdaleno (27-1 with 18 knockouts) was a solid amateur fighter that won a Golden Gloves national title before turning pro in November 2010. He took care of 12 other boxers in his first two years before receiving his first real chance, and Magdaleno took care of business by beating Jonathan Arrellano by unanimous decision to win the WBO-NABO youth junior featherweight belt.

Magdaleno continued to rise through the division, running his record to 23-0 before his next real bout. In November 2016, he squared off against Nonito Donaire for the WBO junior featherweight strap, and he won his first 12-round bout by a convincing unanimous decision. He defended that title with a second-round knockout of Adeilson Dos Santos, but he lost the belt when Isaac Dogboe knocked him out during his second title defense a little over two years ago. Since that defeat, Magdaleno has re-established himself with comfortable victories over Rico Ramos and Rafael Rivera.

Vicente (36-4-2 with 28 knockouts) has won 11 of his last 12 fights coming into Thursday night’s bout. He has been in the game for nearly 14 years, and Vicente has been a gatekeeper in this division for the last half-decade. His biggest victory came almost five years ago when he knocked out 19-0 Juan Dominguez in Trenton, and he has held numerous minor titles during that stretch including the WBO Latino super bantamweight belt, the UBF super bantamweight title, and the WBC FECARBOX super bantamweight strap.

His last big fight was back in July when he lost to 19-0 Tramaine Williams by unanimous decision. Williams largely controlled that fight and Magdaleno will be out to do the same on Thursday.
