Jaime Munguia vs. John Ryder Boxing Betting

Undefeated former world champion Jaime Munguia takes on John Ryder in a super middleweight bout scheduled for January 27 in Phoenix. A winner in all 42 of his professional fights, Munguia held the WBO light middleweight belt for nearly two years before vacating the title and moving up in weight. Also, with a win over Ryder there’s talk of a matchup with undisputed super middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez. He still has to get past the battle-tested Brit Ryder and looking ahead could be a costly mistake. Still, Munguia is a prohibitive favorite at -315 on the opening boxing betting line.

A relative unknown in North America probably because only two of his 38 professional fights have taken place there, Ryder is a force within the division. Twice he held interim super middleweight titles and all six of his losses were in title fights, most recently a unanimous decision to Alvarez last May. Though he’s nearly a decade older Ryder has fewer fights on his resume and as the +238 underdog he likely feels he has nothing to lose.

The 12-round super middleweight fight between Jaime Munguia ( 42-0, 33 KOs ) and John Ryder ( 32-6, 18 KOs ) will take place on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, AZ and will be streamed on DAZN.

Jaime Munguia vs. John Ryder Fight Preview

Munguia kept his perfect record intact with a gutsy unanimous decision against former world title contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko to earn the WBC silver super middleweight strap last June. He’s been fighting for titles ever since a third-round KO of Jose Carlos Paz in 2018 earned him a regional belt. Later that year, Munguia entered the mainstream market winning the WBO light middleweight strap with a fourth-round TKO of Sadam Ali. He successfully defended his title five times before moving up a division following a KO of Patrick Allotey in September 2019.

You have to wonder what’s wrong with the picture Munguia is painting. He’s only 26 years old with 42 wins and zero defeats in his career. A record like that should move you up the ranks rather quickly only that hasn’t been the case. He’s been a world champion and is ranked among the top 5 active middleweights by several publications, but he lacks a signature fight and more importantly a signature win.

It’s been a journey for Munguia since moving to middleweight. He scored a TKO over Gary O’Sullivan in his debut fight and won the WBO intercontinental title in his next bout when Tureano Johnson retired due to doctor’s stoppage. His last fight was his most challenging, but it was against an aging opponent seemingly on the down slope of his career. Derevyanchenko had just two wins in his previous six fights and it was a struggle. Most pundits viewed it as one of the best fights of 2023 with Munguia scoring a late knockdown on his way to a unanimous decision.

For Ryder this is a chance to prove his last fight wasn’t a fluke. He lost to Alvarez but few expected him to go the distance against the undisputed champ. And there aren’t many more opportunities left now that Ryder is fighting at the age of 38. His first fight at super middleweight took place in 2017 with a controversial split decision loss to Rocky Fielding for the British title.

He won his next four fights all by KO earning a shot at the WBA and The Ring super middleweight titles against Callum Smith. In what most saw as a close fight, the scorecards differed with a number of media outlets describing the outcome again as controversial.

Bet Jaime Munguia vs. John Ryder

With different fighting styles the one who can impose his will likely has the best chance of winning. Ryder hung with Alvarez by engaging in the middle of the ring and not letting Canelo use his reach and jab. Ryder also rebounded from a knockdown to go the distance proving he can take a punch. For Munguia it’s about going on the offensive and being the aggressor. He also has a point to make with a potential bout with Alvarez in the future. And scoring a KO, something Alvarez couldn’t do against Ryder, will all fuel to the fire.
