Gervonta Davis vs Leo Santa Cruz Preview
Davis has been one of the best boxers in the world for the past four years. He began his career not long after turning 18, and it didn’t take much time for Davis to demonstrate his prowess.
His first eight fights ended with Davis registering a knockout inside of four rounds. German Meraz has the distinction of being the only boxer not to be knocked out by Davis in a six-round bout in October 2014, but Davis knocked out his next three opponents within 100 seconds.
We saw Davis continue to showcase his power, leading to an IBF super featherweight title fight with Jose Pedraza in January 2017. Davis won by seventh-round TKO and defended the title against Liam Walsh just four months later. He added the WBA super featherweight strap to his waist with a third-round TKO of Jesus Cuellar in April 2018, and he crushed his next two foes to easily defend those belts.
Davis’ last fight was the most difficult of his career. He needed all 12 rounds to knock out Yuriorkis Gamboa for the WBA lightweight belt in December. Gamboa was a warrior, fighting despite rupturing his Achilles’ tendon in the second round, and he nearly went the distance.
Santa Cruz has seven years more experience than Davis. He suffered a setback with a draw in just his second fight, but he put that behind him to win 31 straight fights. His first major title came in June 2012 when he beat Vusi Malinga by unanimous decision for the IBF bantamweight belt. Santa Cruz defended that title three times before moving up a weight class to secure a third-round TKO of Victor Terrazas to win the WBC super bantamweight belt.
He went on to successfully defend that strap four times before moving up once more. In August 2015, he won a close majority decision over Abner Mares to claim the WBA featherweight title, but Santa Cruz suffered his first loss in July 2016 when he lost a majority decision to Carl Frampton.
That defeat was avenged six months later when he won a majority decision over Frampton, and he went on to defend that belt three times before making another step up in weight to face Miguel Flores last November. Santa Cruz won that bout, but he doesn’t have the power of Davis with five of his last six bouts going the distance.
