After multiple postponements, Jamel Herring will finally defend his WBO junior lightweight belt against Carl Frampton on Easter Weekend. This bout was originally supposed to take place in November, but it had to be moved back by two months after Herring developed some eye issues after his September fight with Jonathan Oquendo. COVID forced another postponement in January, and Frampton suffered a hand injury during training in late February to lead to two more delays.

This fight will finally take place on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at the exclusive Caesars Palace Bluewaters in Dubai. ESPN Plus will be streaming the action with the undercard getting underway at 1 p.m. ET, and the main event is slated to start at 3 p.m. ET.

Frampton is the challenger, but he is a slight favorite per the boxing betting odds. At this price, a $127 bet on Frampton would return $100 if he were to claim the title. If Herring were to defend his belt, a $100 wager on him would lead to a $103 profit.

Carl Frampton vs Jamel Herring Preview

Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs) began his career as a super bantamweight. He won his first minor title after just 18 months as a professional, and his win over Kiko Martinez in February 2013 showed that he was a legitimate contender. Frampton beat Martinez a second time for his first major belt in September 2014 when he claimed the IBF super bantamweight belt.

We saw Frampton defend the belt twice before adding the WBA super bantamweight strap with a split decision win over Scott Quigg. That inspired Frampton to make the move to super featherweight, and he won a majority decision over Leo Santa Cruz with the WBA super featherweight belt on the line in his debut. The narrow victory led to a rematch, and Frampton suffered a majority decision loss to Santa Cruz two months later.

Despite the setback, Frampton moved up to another weight class and was rewarded for the decision with a unanimous decision win over Nonito Donaire for the WBO interim featherweight belt three years ago. He retained the title against Luke Jackson, but Josh Warrington beat him by unanimous decision with the IBF featherweight strap on the line. His last two bouts were comfortable victories, yet Herring will provide a real test.

Herring (22-2, 10 KOs) made his professional debut in 2012. He had a largely impressive first few years with a couple hiccups that nearly led to losses before falling by 10th round TKO to Denis Shafikov in July 2016. Herring won his next fight rather handily, but then he suffered a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Ladarius Miller.

That second setback threatened to derail a promising career. However, Herring has not lost since that defeat. He won the IBF-USBA junior lightweight belt over John Vincent Moralde in September 2018, and he scored his first major win by claiming the WBO junior lightweight title with a unanimous decision win over Masayuki Ito.

Herring retained the strap with a unanimous decision win over Lamont Roach Jr. in November 2019, and his second title defense was against Oquendo last September. In a disappointing result, Herring won by disqualification due to repeated headbutts from Oquendo. A particularly vicious clash in the fifth round led to a cut opening over Herring’s eye, and he was unable to proceed in the eighth round due to vision issues.
