Brandon Figueroa vs Stephen Fulton Preview

Brandon Figueroa has a championship pedigree. His older brother Omar Figueroa was the WBC lightweight champion for almost two years in the mid-2010s, and that’s the time that the younger Figueroa started his professional career. It took him a little over three years to move to 16-0, leading to a showdown with Oscar Escandon. That was his toughest test yet as Escandon was a former super bantamweight and featherweight champion, but Figueroa was able to secure a 10th round TKO.

That opened the door for bigger fights and greater opportunities. Figueroa knocked out Moises Flores in the third round four months later, leading to a title shot against Yonfrez Parejo. He retired Parejo in the eighth round to claim the WBA interim super bantamweight title. Figueroa successfully defended the belt with a fourth-round knockout of Javier Nicolas Chacon, but he could only manage a draw against Julio Ceja when the interim tag was taken off his title.

Figueroa was more impressive in his last two fights. He retained the title with a 10th round TKO of Damien Vazquez last September, and he secured a seventh-round knockout of Luis Nery in May. That win secured Figueroa the WBC super bantamweight belt.

Stephen Fulton has been a professional fighter for longer than Figueroa, but he isn’t as experienced of a fighter. He wasn’t as polished early on either, needing the judges to decide five of his first eight fights. His majority decision win over Joshua Greer Jr. showed that he was on rocky footing, and he needed a majority decision to beat Adam Lopez too.

Still, Fulton stayed unbeaten and continued to rise the ranks. He claimed the IBO super bantamweight belt over Paulus Ambunda in May 2019, winning by unanimous decision. That led to him moving up a weight class to take on Isaac Avelar, and he scored a sixth-round knockout. Felton moved back down to super bantamweight in 2020 and defeated Arnold Khegai and Angelo Lee by unanimous decision, claiming the WBO super bantamweight title with the latter victory.

This fight was originally supposed to take place on September 11, but it has been moved back twice as Figueroa tested positive for COVID. Figueroa has the size advantage and the reach advantage, as he is 5’8 with a 72.5 inch reach compared to the 5’7 Fulton and his 70.5 inch reach.
