For Anthony Joshua his upcoming bout against Alexander Povetkin is a means to an end. Ultimately Joshua has his sights on the World Boxing Council title belt that is currently held by Deontay Wilder. But to get there he must first get past Povetkin in this heavyweight unification title bout that has caught the imagination of the boxing community.

Povetkin will be no pushover as a grizzled veteran that has suffered just one loss in his 35 career bouts when he was voted out on points against the great and famed Wladimir Klitschko in October of 2013. Since that one career loss Povetkin has won his last eight consecutive bouts.

This bout will be taking place in Joshua’s own backyard at London’s Wembley Stadium. It will be the third time that Joshua has stepped into the ring at Great Britain’s most famous stadium. He previously scored a knockout win over Matt Legg and arguably the biggest win of his career last year against Klitschko.

Joshua has a career record of 21 wins with a total of 20 coming by knockout while Povetkin has 34 wins and one loss for his career with a total of 24 wins coming by knockout.

Joshua has been complimentary of Povetkin and acknowledged that he will have to train and prepare hard. Joshua also said that it would be foolish to believe that Povetkin is not a capable challenger.

Povetkin has said this bout is the opportunity to fulfill a lifetime career goal. He is not shy about stating that he wants all four of Joshua’s belts. Further, Povetkin also said that the unification title matchup of two Olympic champs is a breath-taking event.

Povetkin is well known and respected for being a very accurate puncher. In addition, his toughness is second to none. Another factor that may work against Joshua is his relative size to the much shorter Povetkin. In the past Joshua has struggled against shorter opponents.

Joshua has proven to be the champion and personality that the sport has desperately needed for quite some time. He defeated Klitschko in front of 90,000 fans last year and subsequently beat Carlos Takam in front of 78,000 fans. No other boxer can fill football stadiums so effectively.

Povetkin’s tenacity and size will provide Joshua a stern test. At the same time Joshua is a super power boxer with a nuclear bomb punch. In the course of a 12 round bout the quality of Joshua should prevail. As much as Povetkin deserves respect he is not on Joshua’s class.
