Fight Preview

First, it should be remembered Tomoki Kameda is a past World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion as recently as four years ago. Since he lost that title belt has been on a single-minded quest to regain the championship. Rey Vargas first won the World Boxing Council super-bantamweight title on February 25, 2017 and has successfully defended the title belt a total of four times.

Golden Boy Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya is quite excited about this matchup. “July 13 will not disappoint as the best 122 pounder in the world in Rey Vargas defends his world title against an explosive challenger. This will demonstrate what we have been doing at the Golden Boy for many years: producing stars and making the best fights possible.”

Vargas is 28 years old that has used his height and reach advantage as a major factor in his undefeated success up to his point. The native of Mexico City, Mexico has the record and confidence of a man that has defended his title multiple times against the best of competition.

“This is going to be a hard and complicated fight,” sad Rey Vargas. “Kameda is a difficult opponent who has been a world champion. Above all, however, he has a thorn in his side that he’ll want to take out because I beat him in the amateurs several years ago. This is an interesting fight. He is a quick fighter and he’ll look to take advantage of that, but thanks to God and my corner we are already working to counteract the strategy of this Japanese fighter. God Willing, we will walk away with our hand in victory.”

Kameda calls both Japan and Mexico home and voices great love and passion for each country. His nickname is “Mexicanito” as he moved to Mexico in order to more fully develop as a boxer in the amateur ranks. He utilizes techniques learned in both countries to now emerge as one of the most complete fighters in the sport,

“This is going to be a great battle,” said Tomoki Kameda. “I know Ray Vargas very well. We fought in the amateurs during my time in Mexico. I look forward to getting my revenge against him and becoming a two-division world champion. I know Vargas is a tall fighter with long arms, but the Mexican style that I possess will give him a lot of trouble and make for a great fight for the fans!”

“Rey Vargas will prove that he is invincible, and that’s why he has the belt with the highest ranking,” said President of Promociones del Pueblo, Oswaldo Kuchle. It’s hard to argue with that logic considering Rey Vargas and his championship resume.
