Jose Ramirez will be making his first title defense for the World Boxing Council World Super Lightweight belt when he faces top contender Antonio Orozco. In his last fight Ramirez scored a decision win over Amir Imam on March 17 to secure that vacant WBC World Super Lightweight championship. Ramirez was since supposed to meet Danny O’Connor for the belt but O’Connor had to pull out due to suffering from severe dehydration from trying to make weight. As a result, Antonio Orozco will get his chance. What’s more is that Orozco is considered a far superior challenger than O’Connor would have been.

The bout between Jose Ramirez (22-0, 16 knockouts) and Antonio Orozco (27-0, 17 knockouts) is for the World Boxing Council World Super Lightweight title and will take place at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California with coverage on ESPN and ESPN Deportes. The championship fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.

Fight Preview

Ramirez was quick to give Orozco respect by praising the fact that the challenger is undefeated for his career. Ramirez considers Fresno his own back yard and praised its fight fans for past support while promising to fight for a community that he has great respect for. He also promised to make for a bigger and better show than his previous fight there.

Top Rank chairman Bob Arum is also touting the bout by stating that this matchup will be a signature fight for Ramirez beings that Orozco is undefeated and a highly respected contender.

Orozco has been a leading and emerging contender for the past couple of years with his biggest challenge simply making weight. In fact, Orozco has failed to make weight twice in which fights had to be cancelled as a result. Orozco will make weight this time as its in the contract for him to do so, especially with those aforementioned cancellations having had television contracts that had to be broken.

Orozco is not shy about saying this is his biggest fight ever. He said his time is now and that this is the moment for him to become a world champion. He vowed to take full advantage of the opportunity and was grateful to trainer Frank Espinoza and Golden Boy Promotions for all that they did to get him to this point. Orozco acknowledged that Ramirez is a tough fighter and that it won’t be easy fighting in the champ’s own back yard. But Orozco says that he has the experience and the skills to come away with the win. In fact, he believes he will depart the ring in Fresno rocking a title belt around his waist.

Further adding to the intrigue of this bout is the fact that fights between Top Rank and Golden Boy are rare occurrences although this is their second major pairing of the year after Vasiliy Lomachenko and Jorge Linares met for a lightweight championship bout back in May.

There has been quite a wait in Fresno for Ramirez to return to his hometown ring in a championship bout. Ramirez is a beloved figure in the Fresno community and is quite active in it. He has committed to immigrant rights and water rights for area farmers. He won the title belt on March 17 of this year in a unanimous decision win over Amir Imam. Ramirez is a former Olympian and top draw.
