Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk Preview

Before his stunning loss at the hands of Andy Ruiz Jr. two years ago, many were calling Anthony Joshua the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. After all, Joshua was dominant at the 2012 Summer Olympics on his way to winning gold, and he made quick work out of his first 14 opponents after turning pro. Joshua finished his first 14 fights within three rounds, winning the WBC International and Commonwealth heavyweight titles in that stretch.

His first real test came against Dillian Whyte in December 2015, and Joshua answered the call with a 7th round TKO. Joshua won the IBF Heavyweight Belt with a 2nd round knockout of Charles Martin, and he unified the heavyweight division by adding the WBA and IBO titles with an 11th round TKO of Wladimir Klitschko four years ago. A win over Joseph Parker in March 2018 added a fourth strap to his waist as he was now the WBO champion, and he defended all four titles against Alexander Povetkin before his loss to Ruiz.

Joshua was able to defeat Ruiz in their rematch in December 2019. He proceeded to knock out Kubrat Pulev in his most recent fight last December, but this will be Joshua’s toughest test yet as a fighter.

Oleksandr Usyk also won gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Usyk has spaced out his fights more, entering the ring just 18 times in his eight years as a professional boxer. He won his first nine fights by KO or TKO before a unanimous decision win over Krzysztof Glowacki in September 2016 gave him the WBO Cruiserweight Belt.

Usyk added more straps to his midsection in the World Boxing Super Series. He became the WBC cruiserweight champion after a close majority decision win over Mairis Briedis, and he was the undisputed champion after winning the WBA, IBF, and The Ring cruiserweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Murat Gassiev. Usyk successfully defended all five titles once before making the jump to heavyweight.
