Ottawa Redblacks PredictionsCanadian Football Odds: The Ottawa Redblacks are the CFL's new franchise. They're the latest incarnation of football in Canada's capitol, and though they haven't had a great history in terms of regular season wins and losses, they are the defending Grey Cup champions. That said, the team that is going to be on the field in 2017 will look little like the Grey Cup team from a season ago, and that could make this a frustrating season.

The Redblacks proved at the end of last season that they could play with anyone. Henry Burris was the team's starting quarterback at the end of the year, and he saved what might have been his best game for his last showing before riding off into the sunset. Burris beat the seemingly unbeatable Stampeders with a great showing for four quarters (and overtime!), and he decided right after the game that enough was enough.

Trevor Harris is now taking over under center, and he's going to have some new pieces to the puzzle around him as well. The Redblacks lost four of their defensive backs from last season, and they only brought back Toronto's A.J. Jefferson. Tori Gurley and Diontae Spencer are going to be expected to infuse some life into this passing game, especially with Ernest Jackson and Chris Williams moving on.

The Redblacks also have a somewhat odd schedule this year. They'll get three bye weeks instead of the two the rest of the teams in the league will get, but they'll have to play two games in Week 5, one on Wednesday and one on Monday. After playing three games in a span of 10 days, Ottawa will get its first bye.

List of Ottawa Redblacks Seasons

Year Record Playoffs
2016 8-9-1 Won Grey Cup
2015 12-6 Lost Grey Cup
2014 2-16

Football in Ottawa hasn't been all that successful. The old Renegades were a disaster in their entire existence, and the even older Rough Riders didn't win a single playoff game from 1983 through the end of their existence in 1996, failing to have a single winning season in the bunch.

The Redblacks looked to be off to the same sort of trouble in their initial season. The good news was that they had Henry Burris as their starting quarterback. The bad news was that the team around him wasn't very good. The team went 2-16 and obviously missed the postseason.

But the next year, fortunes turned quickly. Ottawa finished with a franchise-best 12-6 record and went to the Grey Cup, only to fall short against Edmonton. The next season, the team won the East in spite of a woeful 8-9-1 record, but that was good enough to rally to the Grey Cup and beat the Stampeders 39-33 in overtime.
