Old School Meets New School
In a rapidly expanding sport like MMA, there’s always a ton of announcements from the world’s largest promotion, the UFC. At times, it’s difficult to keep up. So for those of you who’ve been busy at summer’s end, we’ve got your back with a few important stories you may have missed....
The UFC returns to Japan, birthplace of the fabled Pride FC, for a card pitting popular Japanese fighters against an assortment of talents from all over the world. While I’m usually not a fan of “Country vs. the World” type cards, there are a few intriguing storylines leading up to fight night....
Since finishing as a runner-up on TUF 17 and notching the most spectacular knockout on the history of the show, Uriah Hall – 11-5, 7 KOs, 2 SUBs – has failed to live up to considerable expectations. But that can all change in a matchup against the UFC’s No. 6 middleweight, Gegard Mousasi – 37-5, 19 KOs, 12 SUBs. An injury replacement, Hall will have just under a month to prepare for the biggest fight of his life....
The UFC’s is really setting a “Japan vs. the world” narrative in their return to the Saitama Super Arena for UFC Fight Night 75. Japanese native and former WEC bantamweight title challenger Takeya Mizugaki – 20-9, 5 KOs, 1 SUB – will look to break out of a two-fight losing skid against the rangy George Roop – 15-11-1, 4 KOs, 7 SUBs – who’s looking to bounce back from a loss of his own....
Kyoji Horiguchi – 15-2, 9 KOs, 2 SUBs – will fight for the first time since falling well short in his title bid against flyweight kingpin Demetrious Johnson, and he’ll have the added benefit of fighting at home. The Japanese native will meet veteran Chico Camus -14-6, 4 KOs, 3 SUBs – in the UFC’s return to the land of the rising sun, in hopes of starting another run at the title....
In a matchup with heavyweight title implications, Stipe Miocic – 13-2, 9 KOs, 1 SUB – will meet Ben Rothwell – 20 KOs, 12 SUBs – at UFC Fight Night 76 in Dublin. Given the power that both men wield, it’s highly likely somebody will be left senseless by the time the fight is over. Isn’t it great when a barnburner between big men has significance?...
When it comes to women UFC fighters, there is Ronda Rousey and then there’s everyone else. But for casual fans, it would be a huge mistake to overlook women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk – 10-0, 4 KOs, 1 SUB. The Polish striker will defend her title against Brazilian rival Claudia Gadelha – 13-1, 2 KOs, 6 SUBs – at UFC 195, and it’s by far the most exciting women’s matchup the promotion can currently make....
If you’re going to prepare for a bout against the greatest women’s fighter of all time, it helps to have one of the best pound-for-pound fighters as a dedicated training partner. Holly Holm – 9-0, 6 KOs – has been reportedly training with former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in preparation for her title challenge at UFC 193 against the seemingly invincible Ronda Rousey – 12-0, 3 KOs, 9 SUBs – but oddmakers don’t seem to think it’ll matter....
Watch out, Conor Mcgregor. There’s a hot new Irish prospect in the UFC that’s making waves. “Irish Joe” Duffy – 14-1, 4 KOs, 9 SUBs – the last man to beat McGregor, will meet Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier – 18-4, 9 KOs, 6 SUBs – in the headlining bout of UFC Fight Night 76. Coincidentally, it was McGregor’s beating of Poirier that launched the superstar into elite status....
It’s hard to remember a time when the UFC’s lightweight class wasn’t loaded with talent, and that’s still very much the case today. However, there isn’t a standout who seems poised to dominate the division in the way that B.J. Penn once did. But even without a superstar leading the way, the 155-pound field looks set for years to come....
As 2015 winds down, the UFC has absolutely loaded the year-end calendar with huge fights that already have many MMA fans buzzing. And because these matchups come with so much hype, you know that we’ve got you covered with early odds that you can bet on now. Check out some of the biggest bouts we’ve got lines for now, and try not to drool....
After nearly two years on the sidelines, veteran heavyweight contender Josh Barnett – 33-7, 8 KOs, 20 SUBs – will return to the octagon. “The Warmaster” literally has some heavy lifting to do, as he’ll face knockout artist Roy “Big Country” Nelson – 20-11, 13 KOs, 5 SUBs – in one of Japan’s largest stadiums....
45-year old Dan Henderson – 31-13, 15 KOs, 2 SUBs – and 38-year old Vitor Belfort – 24-11, 17 KOs, 3 SUBs are meeting for the third time at UFC Fight Night 77, with their rivalry spanning back to the glory days of Pride Fighting Championships. And with over 30 KOs between them, you can expect one of these living legends to have his consciousness removed before the final bell....
The welterweight division is stacked with elite fighters in their primes, but there’s no single fighter who looks like he could dominate the division like Georges St. Pierre. It adds up to an extremely volatile situation, making it one of the promotion’s most exciting weight classes....
There’s no denying that Conor McGregor has put the featherweight division in the spotlight like none before him. Although the 145-pound class has never had a problem drumming up interest, unlike the flyweight division, it’s never been a premier draw – even with a dominant champion like Jose Aldo. That has quickly changed....
UFC 192 is quickly shaping up to be the most loaded card of the fall season. Headlined by a light heavyweight championship bout between Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustaffson, the main card also features two title eliminators and a pivotal flyweight clash. So of course Bookmaker’s got you covered with early odds you can bet on now....
UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey – 12-0, 3 KOs, 9 SUBs – has always been a very expensive bet, and that’s not changing in her next title defense no matter who she faces. Previously slated to face rival Miesha Tate, the UFC has changed course and booked “Rowdy” against undefeated Holly Holm – 9-0, 6 KOs. Now she’s an even bigger favorite....
Brazilian prospect Tiago Trator – 19-5-2, 7 KOs, 6 SUBs – will fill in for Andre Fili to fight Clay Collard – 14-6, 8 KOs, 2 SUBs – at UFC 191. Trator will have less than a month to prepare for the fight. Both featherweights are in desperate need of a win as relative UFC newcomers trying to earn stability with the promotion....
Raquel Pennington – 5-5, 1 KO, 2 SUBs – finally has an opponent at UFC 191. After Leslie Smith and Liz Carmouche both withdrew from the bout due to injuries, Jessica Andrade – 13-4, 4 KOs, 6 SUBs – has stepped up on short notice. And that’s not a good thing for Pennington....
Casual UFC fans might not recognize the names of John Lineker – 25-7, 12 KOs, 3 SUBs – and Francisco Rivera – 11-4, 8 KOs – but many hardcore enthusiasts are touting their UFC 191 matchup as an early darkhorse candidate for Fight of the Night. These are two high-level strikers that throw heavy heat – what more do you need?...
Anthony “Rumble” Johnson – 19-5, 13 KOs – is the most powerful puncher at 205, hands down. So naturally, the UFC is pitting him against a man who’s also known for concussive power: British slugger Jimi Manuwa – 15-1, 13 KOs, 1 SUB. Yup, this one’s gonna be a barnburner, and is the early favorite for Fight of the Night at UFC 191....
When it comes to the UFC’s most dominant champions, Demetrious Johnson – 22-2, 4 KOs, 9 SUBS – is right up there with Ronda Rousey and Jon Jones. Now that he’s lapped the field, “Mighty Mouse” will defend the man that gave him his toughest flyweight test to date, the powerful John Dodson – 17-6, 8 KOs, 2 SUBS....
It’s tough to make an impression in the crowded lightweight division, but Paul Felder – 10-1, 7 KOs – is making people take notice. Although he’s coming off a close loss to Edson Barboza, Felder will get an opportunity to right the ship against a respected veteran in Ross Pearson – 17-9, 7 KOs, 5 SUBs – when the two meet at UFC 194 in Las Vegas....
Jan Blachowicz’ – 18-4, 5 KOs, 7 SUBs – night at UFC 194 just got a lot easier – and a lot less relevant. Once slated to meet contender Anthony Johnson, the Pole will now meet TUF 19 winner Corey Anderson – 5-1, 3 KOs – due to some lineup shuffling. Opportunity now knocks for Anderson, who could break into the top-15 with a victory....
Andrei Arlovski – 24-10, 17 KOs, 3 SUBs – is doing his best Robbie Lawler impression as the heavyweight Cinderella Man. Once written off as a over-the-hill former champion, “The Pit Bull” is on the cusp of another title shot, with three straight wins since returning to the UFC. Now, he faces the resurgent Frank Mir – 18-0, 5 KOs, 9 SUBs – to inch closer to the top of the mountain....
