This year’s Kentucky Derby is four months late, but that’s better than never. Unlike other sporting events that were cancelled, the Kentucky Derby decided to move this event from the first weekend of May to the first weekend of September, making it the second leg in the 2020 Triple Crown. This year’s Run for the Roses won’t have a full field, but there are currently 18 horses looking to etch their name in history at Churchill Downs. Tiz the Law is expected to be an odds-on favorite at post time per the horse racing betting odds after winning the Belmont Stakes, but Honor A.P. and Authentic will look to knock him off.

Tiz the Law is a big favorite considering some of the best three-year-olds in the country won’t be taking part in this year’s Kentucky Derby. Nadal, Basin, Wells Bayou, and Dr. Post won’t be at Churchill Downs, and Art Collector was scratched after suffering a minor foot injury earlier this week.

The 2020 Belmont Stakes winner was a 6-5 favorite to win that race, and he cruised to a 3 ¾ length victory in June. Tiz the Law has now won four straight races, including three Grade I races, posting a Beyer Speed rating of at least 112 each time out. He has lived up to the hype since his impressive performance at the Florida Derby, and he stayed fresh with an easy victory over fellow Derby entrants Max Player and South Bend at the Travers Stakes last month. Tiz the Law will be starting 17, in between his biggest rivals in Honor A.P. and Authentic.

This horse might be from Kentucky, but all his races have been in California over the last year. Honor A.P. has alternated first- and second-place finishes at Del Mar and Santa Anita, posting a Beyer Speed rating of at least 100 in four straight races. His second-place finish to Authentic at the San Felipe Stakes showcased his potential, and he bested Authentic at the Santa Anita Derby back in early June. However, he finished second to Thousand Words in a four-horse race at Del Mar last month, so there are concerns although he was bumped out of the gate in that one.

Legendary trainer Bob Baffert’s best chance to win this year’s Kentucky Derby is with Authentic. This horse has won four of the five races it has entered, and Authentic has three graded stakes victories to his name. His performance at the Sham Stakes in January set the horse racing world ablaze given his 113 rating in just his second race, and he followed that up by winning the San Felipe Stakes. Authentic had his worst performance of the year at the Santa Anita Derby, posting a 101 speed rating to place behind Honor A.P., but he edged out Ny Traffic to win the Haskell Stakes six weeks ago.

A win at the Tampa Bay Derby thrust King Guillermo into the spotlight back in March. No one expected the 49-1 longshot to compete in a graded stakes race with Sole Volante, Chance It, and others, but he posted a career-high 110 rating to beat Sole Volante by nearly five lengths. King Guillermo finished second to Nadal at the Arkansas Stakes in May, but that’s nothing to be worried about since Nadal is seen as one of the two or three best three-year-olds this year.

If you’re looking to bet a horse to WPS, Ny Traffic might be your best bet. This horse has yet to win a graded stakes race, but Ny Traffic has been in the money all four times. He didn’t crack 100 on the Beyer Speed rating until his last race at Monmouth Park, but he nearly beat out Authentic before losing by a nose.
