2023 Preakness Stakes Longshots

The Preakness Stakes is set for Saturday with Kentucky Derby winner Mage listed as the 8-5 morning line favorite. A field of eight will go to the post on Saturday and for the first time this century only one horse from the Kentucky Derby will be entered and that horse is Mage. He will be trying to become the eighth horse since 2000 to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Post time for Saturday’s race at Pimlico is just after 7 pm Eastern Time on NBC. Let’s look at the Preakness Stakes field, Preakness odds and Preakness Stakes longshot picks.

Preakness Stakes Longshot Picks

With a field of just eight horses, we only have four horses listed at double-digit odds. They are Chase the Chaos, Coffeewithchris, Red Route One and Perform. We’ll look at each of these four horses and examine their chances and then make our Preakness Stakes longshot picks.

Red Route One 10-1

The horse has just two wins in nine starts for trainer Steve Asmussen. There is no question the horse is one of the most experienced in the field. The horse was sixth in the Arkansas Derby and then won the Bath House Row Stakes. He won that race with Lasix and he won’t have that medication in the Preakness. The pace doesn’t figure to set up well for Red Route One and not having Lasix is also a concern.

Perform 15-1

The horse has two wins in seven starts for Shug McGaughey. He didn’t even win until his sixth try. He broke poorly in the Federico Tesio but he rallied to surge in the stretch and get a spot in the Preakness. To be able to run in this race the horse’s connections had to put up a $150,000 supplemental Triple Crown nomination. Perform may be a horse to watch in the Preakness, as the field is weak and Perform may be able to rally late.

Coffeewithchris 20-1

This horse has had 12 starts but just three wins. He had two stakes wins at Laurel Park but finished fifth in the Federico Tesio. This will be his first start in a graded stakes race. I don’t see any real chance for Coffeewithchris to win the Preakness. He has never faced competition this good and he has never shown he can compete with horses of this quality.

Chase the Chaos 50-1

This horse has three wins in seven starts. He won the El Camino Real Derby in February, but he was not competitive in the San Felipe at Santa Anita. The horse will be making his first start outside of the state of California and he is coming off a two-month layoff. It would be a huge upset to see this horse contend, as he has never raced outside of California and the two-months off is a huge concern.

Preakness Longshot Picks

The Preakness is not a great race for longshots and this year looks worse than ever. I don’t like Coffeewithchris and Chase the Chaos at all and think they have no chance. If you want to take a chance with a longshot then I think Perform is the best choice. The connections put up $150,000 just to get into this race so they must think they have a chance to finish in the money. I am not sold on Red Route One, as I don’t think the pace of this race sets up well for him. I’ll go with Perform as my longshot Preakness pick.
