2023 Breeders’ Cup Betting Picks

The 2023 Breeders’ Cup takes place on Friday and Saturday with many of the best horses in the world competing against each other. This year’s race takes place at Santa Anita Park for the 11th time in history. There are five races on Friday and nine on Saturday. The Saturday card features the $6 million dollar Breeders’ Cup Classic with Bob Baffert’s Arabian Knight listed as the 3-1 morning line favorite. Keep in mind that for the first time ever, the Breeders’ Cup Classic will not be the final race, as it will be the 7th race on Saturday with the Turf Sprint and the Sprint following the Classic. Let’s take a look at the Breeders’ Cup Classic and some other Breeders’ Cup picks.

The $6 million 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic lost the 3-year-old Arcangelo who was scratched on Tuesday. That gives Arabian Knight the honor of being the morning-line favorite. In the last 10 years, the Classic has been won by four 3-year olds and all four were trained by Baffert. The favorite in this race has won it a total of 11 times.

I see no reason to go against Arabian Knight. He won the Pacific Classic at Del Mar in September. He has looked really good in his workouts leading up to this race and Baffert has won this race a lot in the past. If you want to put together some exotic tickets then I would throw in Saudi Crown at double-digit odds. He could easily be unbeaten, as his two losses were by a nose. Ushba Tesoro just continues to win, so if he is as good as he was in Japan and Dubai then he could be in the mix. I also think White Abarrio is worth throwing in there, as trainer Rick Dutrow would like nothing better than to win this race, as Dutrow is coming back from a 10-year suspension. The horse also gets one of the to jockeys in Irad Ortiz Jr.

Distaff

There are plenty of contenders to win the Distaff, but I am going to avoid taking the favorite. I am looking instead at Clairiere at odds of 4-1. The horse will be making her third start in the Distaff and last year the horse finished third in this race. The horse has won two Grade 1 races with triple digit Beyer figures. The horse is the daughter of Curlin and Clairiere should get the right pace to come from behind and steal this race. I’ll go with Clairiere to win this race.

Sprint

If you are going to wrap things up in the Breeders’ Cup it is always nice to finish things up with a win. Going with the favorite doesn’t get people that excited, but winning is what this is all about. The last race of the Breeders’ Cup is the Sprint and there is a good chance that the morning-line favorite will win. It will likely be a two-horse sprint to the finish between Speed Boat Beach and Elite Power. It is likely that Baffert’s Speed Boat Beach will go to the font and you should know that horses simply don’t win this race wire-to-wire that often. I think Elite Power wins this race.
