NHL Betting: Stanley Cup Odds

Stanley-Cup-Odds-bm

After a grueling 82-game regular season, the NHL playoffs are set and now 16 teams will try to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup. The action is sure to be intense as although there are a few clear favorites, anything can happen during the NHL postseason. Five of the seven Canadian teams made it, so Canada is hoping that one of its teams can return the Cup to the Great White North. The squads south of the border will have something to say about that though.

It’s no surprise that the two favorites are the two No. 1 seeds. Washington has really come on as the season has progressed and after adding Kevin Shattenkirk, it’s now or never for this team. The Caps are in the top three in both goals scored and goals against and are as well-rounded as they have ever been. If they can’t at least make the Stanley Cup Finals this time, there may be some major moves coming in the offseason.

Chicago ended up winning the West despite finishing the season outside the Top 8 in every major statistical category. The Blackhawks were certainly a little fortunate in that regard and now the most seasoned postseason team will get home ice in the playoffs. Chicago will certainly be a popular pick to win it all at these odds and it’s hard to definitively say that a specific team will knock the Blackhawks out.

If you’re looking for teams to avoid, look no further than the team Chicago surpassed in the West, the Minnesota Wild. The Wild limped through the end of the season and with questions about Jared Spurgeon’s health lingering, concerns about this team’s offensive prowess, and the choking reputation of coach Bruce Boudreau, this team’s price does not reflect its reality.

What about the defending Stanley Cup champs? Pittsburgh is pretty banged up at the moment and will be without its best defenseman for the rest of the postseason. The loss of Kris Letang is huge and although the Penguins can outscore a lot of teams, this team is only considered one of the favorites because of its name. The Pens should be larger underdogs than this so stay away on betting them.

Considering their draws, the odds for both the Anaheim Ducks and the Montreal Canadiens are a bit low. Anaheim won’t have to face Chicago or Minnesota until the Western Conference Finals assuming it wins out and will be favored against both Calgary and the winner of the Edmonton/San Jose series.

Likewise, Montreal will have a tough first round series against the Rangers, but if the Canadiens can get past them, they will face the winner of the Boston/Ottawa series. Montreal has a sharp goaltender, a coach that’s been there before, and a team composition that is just what you need for a deep postseason run.

Of the longshots, the best odds belong to the St. Louis Blues. St. Louis would have to get past Minnesota and likely Chicago as well to reach the Western finals, but was the hottest team in the NHL over the last third of the season and has a very talented goaltender to pair with an offensive playmaker. While these odds are certainly understandable because of the schedule, this is a very intriguing option at this price.
