Terence Crawford vs Shawn Porter Preview

Unbeaten Terence Crawford has been extremely impressive over the course of his career. He never won a national championship as an amateur and didn’t get to participate in the Summer Olympics, but he has been more successful than any American boxer since the retirement of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Crawford won his first title more than seven years ago. He won a unanimous decision over Ricky Burns for the WBO Lightweight Title. He defended the belt against Yuriorkis Gamboa before adding The Ring Lightweight Title from Ray Beltran by unanimous decision. That prompted him to step up in weight class.

He scored a sixth round TKO over Thomas Dulorme to win the WBO Light Welterweight Title. Crawford defended the belt against Dierry Jean and Hank Lundy before adding the WBC and The Ring Light Welterweight belts with a unanimous decision win over Viktor Postol. Once Crawford added those belts around his waist, he fully unified the division with a third-round knockout over Julius Indongo.

That set up another rise up the ranks. Crawford won the WBO Welterweight Title with a TKO of Jeff Horn in June 2018. He has since defended the belt successfully four times, beating all four of his opponents by TKO in the process.

Shawn Porter likes to set the pace in his fights. His last five fights have gone to the cards though, as he has not had the knockout power that separates the best from others. Porter’s first major title came in December 2013 when he defeated Devon Alexander by unanimous decision. He maintained the belt with a fourth-round TKO of Paulie Malignaggi before losing a decision to Kell Brook.

Porter lost a unanimous decision to Keith Thurman in his next title challenge, but he won the WBC Welterweight belt by unanimous decision over Danny Garcia three years ago. He went on to score a split decision win over Yordenis Ugas before losing the title in a split decision to Errol Spence Jr. His most recent fight was a unanimous decision victory over Sebastian Formella over a year ago.

Crawford has a slight edge in the tale of the tape. He is an inch taller than Porter and his reach is an inch longer too.
