Fight Preview

Pedraza may not be as well known as Beltran but he is also under contract with Top Rank which means that regardless of who wins this bout the champion will stay within the Top Rank Family.

Due to the medical problems of Roman Andreev this opens up a tremendous opportunity for Pedraza, who is 29 years of age and will be stepping into the ring against Beltran in what will be the biggest fight of his career.

Pedraza is best known for losing his International Boxing Federation World Super Featherweight title to Gervonta Davis on January 14, 2017 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Davis went on a ferocious attack from the start and pummeled Pedraza into submission with a seventh - round technical knockout win. Since then Pedraza has responded with back to back wins against Antonio Moran and Jose Luis Rodriguez since his move up to the lightweight class.

While Beltran will likely be a public betting favorite due to name recognition it is becoming more apparent that Pedraza will be no tomato can. Pedraza in fact is known for having an excellent jab and movement while being a technically sound boxer with strong fundamentals. Many believe there is irony in the fact that Andreev would have been an easier boxer for Beltran to face even though Andreev is ranked higher.

Beltran is a solid puncher for sure but is also age 36 and is not likely to have the ability to blitz Pedraza the way that Gervonta Davis did. Pedraza was knocked out by Davis based in large part due to is barrage of power punches and the ability to take the attack. It was furious display of a fighter going on offense. While Beltran is indeed a power hitter he will not be able to deliver as many blows as fast as Davis did to Pedraza.

Beltran is known as one of the most exciting fighters in the game and Pedraza has actually been better at 135 pounds than at 130.

The fact remains that Beltran is considered one of the weaker champions in recent memory and his win over Paulus Moses last February has been derided as Moses is 40 and past his prime.

While Pedraza is getting a lot of hype and build up the fact remains that Beltran is a crafty veteran that will be fighting in his home town for the first tome in 13 years. Look for the exciting Beltran to put on a show and keep his title belt!
