Wednesday’s College Basketball Best Bets

Tuesday night saw two teams ranked in the AP Top 10 fall when Michigan State suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of Illinois and St. John’s tipped Marquette by a single point. It was part of a jam-packed session of mid-week games, and while Wednesday’s schedule is noticeably lighter, there are some important games on the menu for tonight. Plenty of bubble teams will be in action, and they will look to strengthen their resumes with wins over conference foes.

Creighton Bluejays at Villanova Wildcats
Date and Time
: Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 8 p.m. ET
Location: Finneran Pavilion, Villanova, Pennsylvania
CBB Betting Line: Villanova -9, O/U 152

It took some time for Villanova to get going this season. The Wildcats had a lot of turnover after winning the national championship last year, and they needed to work through some kinks in order to find their footing. They lost to Furman and dropped a Big Five game for the first time in six seasons in non-conference play, but they have been crushing it in Big East action.

The Wildcats are 9-0 in conference play, and they are three games up on everyone else in the Big East. The conference is down this year with only one other ranked team, and they are making the most of it in a rebuilding season.

Creighton is 4-5 in conference play, and the Bluejays have struggled to beat the best teams in the Big East. They lost to St. John’s twice already, and Nova beat them by 12 the last time these teams faced off.

Jay Wright’s offense was on fire in the previous meeting between these two schools. Veterans Eric Paschall and Phil Booth combined for 49 points on 17-26 shooting, and that led to Nova dropping 90. Creighton plays at a fast tempo, so I expect more of the same here.

LSU Tigers at Mississippi State Bulldogs
Date and Time
: Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 9 p.m. ET
Location: Humphrey Coliseum, Starkville, Mississippi
CBB Betting Line: Mississippi State -2.5, O/U 156

The Tigers are back in the Top 25 under former VCU coach Will Wade, but LSU faces a tough test in Starkville on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs might not be ranked, but they are just one spot behind the Tigers in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings, and LSU will be up against it.

Mississippi State has some nice wins already this season, and this team has been great at home. The Bulldogs have already knocked off Auburn, Cincinnati, Wofford, and Florida in Starkville, and star guard Quinndary Weatherspoon is out to lead them to another big win. This is a game that Mississippi State needs to improve its resume at 4-4 in SEC play, and I think they get it.

Wisconsin Badgers at Minnesota Golden Gophers
Date and Time
: Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 9 p.m. ET
Location: Williams Arena, Minneapolis, Minnesota
CBB Betting Line: Wisconsin -2, O/U 132.5

This is a revenge spot for Wisconsin. Minnesota went into Madison and came out with a win back in early January, holding the Badgers to just 52 points. Wisconsin couldn’t get anything going outside of pushing the ball inside to Ethan Happ, and the Badgers were crushed on the boards.

Minnesota has played a lot of the top teams in the conference tough, but the Golden Gophers only have a few quality wins. They have an awful loss to Boston College on their resume, and they know that they need to start turning some of these close losses into wins.

The Golden Gophers have won four in a row at home, and their fans will be into this one against a conference opponent. They need to be able to hit the three though, and Minnesota is sinking just 31.1 percent from the floor this year.

Oklahoma State Cowboys at TCU Horned Frogs
Date and Time:
Wednesday, February 6, 2019, 9 p.m. ET
Location: Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena, Fort Worth, Texas
CBB Betting Line: TCU -9, O/U 141.5

The Horned Frogs are now in must-win territory. At 3-5 in the conference, they can’t afford a loss to an Oklahoma State team that has been decimated by injuries and suspensions. TCU has yet to get a real signature win, and the Horned Frogs were blasted by Texas Tech and Baylor in their last two games. With tilts against Iowa State and Kansas coming in the next week, they will want to make quick work of the Cowboys.
