Olympic Games Betting Odds: When it comes to mano e mano competition, it doesn't get a heck of a lot better than Olympic wrestling. Men and women get in the circle against each other. The better man or woman advances in the tournament, while the lesser man or woman often ends up being knocked to the sidelines.
The objective is simple. Take down your foe and render him or her unable to fight back. Injuries don't happen often, and the game is often referred to as a gentlemen's game with a ton of respect on both sides. The goal of winning gold medals, though? That's a significant challenge regardless of the weight class.
Wrestling has been a part of all but one of the Olympic Games historically, that coming in 1904. A total of 18 events will take place from Friday, August 14 through the final day of the Olympiad, Sunday, August 16 at the Olympic Training Center in Rio de Janeiro.
A total of 25 men and 24 women compete in each weight class. That number is whittled down to 16 via a qualifying round, and from there, it's single elimination until the end of the tournament. Semifinal losers meet in the bronze medal match, while the finalists compete for gold and silver medals.
The wrestlers have to be amateurs in order to be in the circle against each other, and that often creates tremendous competition. The Soviets still have more gold medals (62) than any other nation, but the Americans have caught them in terms of total medal count in wrestling with 125. Sweden and Finland are both on the verge of reaching the whopping 100 medal count in Olympic weightlifting, as they're at 84 and 83 respectively. Both have a chance to get to 30 gold medals by the time the Olympics are said and done with this year.
