Terence Crawford retains world title

Terence Crawford, happy to be fighting in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, for the first time as a professional, delivered a star-making performance as he knocked out Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round of a thrilling fight to retain his lightweight world title Saturday night at the CenturyLink Center.

Not only did Crawford deliver the goods before 10,943 screaming fans, but he and Gamboa -- a former unified featherweight titleholder and 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist -- put on a clear fight of the year contender, an intense battle in which Gamboa was knocked down four times but also rocked Crawford.

Yuriorkis Gamboa has a tough test ahead: the challenger hasn't fought since a lackluster win over Darleys Perez last June. What's more, Gamboa has been mostly inactive recently, fighting only once in 2013, 2012 and twice in 2011. And to top it all off, he'll be fighting on the champion's home soil of Nebraska in front of a hostile crowd. Needless to say, Crawford will be a heavy favorite in the Bookmaker boxing sportsbook.

The fight will be only the second world title bout in Omaha History. Joe Frazier defended the heavyweight championship in Omaha in 1972 – 15 years before Crawford was born. "It's been a real long time coming," Crawford stated in an ESPN interview, "I've been looking forward to it since I turned pro. There's a lot of support here for me, a lot of people asking me when I'm gonna fight here. We got the fight here now and everyone is excited about it. It's gonna be a big opportunity for me to fight in Omaha and be successful with a victory over the likes of Gamboa."

Crawford and Gamboa have identical records, 23-0 with 16 KOs, meaning somebody will receive the first loss of their career. Gamboa, who is promoted by Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, is a 2004 Cuban Olympic gold medalist. He unified two world titles at featherweight in 2010, but his wins have fallen under suspicion since his implication in the Biogenesis PED drug scandal.

Crawford looked dominant in his last fight against Ricky Burns in Glasgow, Scotland, taking the Scottish native to school en route to a clear unanimous decision. However, he hasn't flashed a ton of KO power, meaning you'd probably want to take the prop bet at Bookmaker that his fight goes the distance.
