Why: World Boxing Organization World Welterweight Title
World Boxing Organization World Welterweight Title
Terence Crawford will be a prohibitive favorite in his upcoming title bout against Amir Khan and with plenty of good reason. Crawford has displayed a level of dominance that is unsurpassed in the sport of boxing. Not only has Crawford never lost a fight but he has won in such dominant fashion that gamblers have a level of trust for him that is unrivaled in the sport.
Crawford is well regarded as a multiple world champion with title belts in three different weight classes. Included in that championship resume is the World Boxing Organization welterweight title since 2018. Previously Crawford held the World Boxing Organization, Ring Magazine, and lineal lightweight championships from 2014 to 2015. Additionally, Crawford held the unified World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Organization and Ring light welterweight titles between 2015 and 2017. Further, in August of 2017 Crawford had a short reign as the undisputed light welterweight champion before he moved up to the welterweight class.
Crawford’s accomplishment of holding an undisputed title cannot be ignored as it is rare in today’s era of boxing. He was the first male to pull off the feat since Jermain Taylor in 2005 and is only one of five boxers in history to do so.
As recently as May 2018, Crawford held the distinction of being ranked as the world’s second-best active pound for pound boxer by the Boxing Writers Association of America, the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, The Ring, ESPN and BoxRec. Beyond that Crawford was named Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association in 2014. ESPN bestowed the same honor upon Crawford in both 2014 and 207.
Crawford is the closest thing to a major league “franchise” in the city of Omaha, Nebraska where he still resides as a local hero.
Amir Khan is a native of England and has fought in multiple weight classes and is a past champion in his own right. Khan held the unified light welterweight championship from 2009 through 2012 and the International Boxing Federation title in 2011. He is also known as a TV star that has appeared in both game shows and reality TV.
