Marquez vs. Katsidis is boxing at its best: The two best fighters in the division going to war. An undisputed world champion title at stake. And one masterful boxer against a never-say-die brawler. This bout has got "Fight of the Year" written all over it.

Mexico's legendary Juan Manuel Marquez is a former three-division world champion, winning eight titles in three different weight classes. He famously fought Manny Pacquiao to a draw, although he would lose to the Filipino fighter in a rematch. Marquez also holds notable victories over Orlando Salido, Juan Diaz (twice), Joel Casamayor and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Although Marquez' technical skills are undeniable, he's been in definite physical decline for a few years now. At 37, he's much closer to the end of his career than the beginning -- with 57 professional bouts, he's got about a million miles on his legs. But he's still good enough to be the lightweight champion of the world, and that's because he's one of the savviest boxers on the planet.

To say Michael Katsides is aggressive might be an understatement -- the Aussie charges forward like Bald Bull. He's currently riding a four fight winning streak that includes victories over Vicente Escobedo, Jesus "Matador" Chavez and a 31-0 Kevin Mitchell, who Katsides put away in three rounds.

So far, his all-or-nothing fighting style has wreaked havoc on his opponents, and that's because Katsides has got dynamite in both his fists. His right hand is particularly lethal. He applies more pressure than an unmarried pregnant girlfriend, cutting off the ring to engage in flurries at every opportunity. However, like most fighters with similar styles, the pride of Toowoomba, Queensland has got some serious holes in his defense.

Considering the fighters, this scrap is almost guaranteed to be a barnburner. Marquez defines toughness and skill, while Katsides fights with volatile aggression and fury. The Australian needs to keep this fight in close quarters and keep the right hand coming, while the Mexican will need every ounce of his skill to outbox him. This is what the sweet science is all about.

Juan Manuel Marquez stops Michael Katsidis, defends lightweight title

Juan Manuel Marquez defended his lightweight title for the second time Saturday, stopping Michael Katsidis in the ninth round of their title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Despite suffering a knockdown in the third round off a hard left hook from Katsidis, Marquez recovered and went on to control much of the fight.

Marquez looked good from the opening bell, working his jab effectively and lighting up Katsidis with numerous combinations.

Momentum changed drastically in the third, when Katsidis was able to work inside and land the big punch that put Marquez down.

The Mexican champion fought a smart fight from then on and appeared to find his rhythm even when Katsidis backed him up against the ropes.

As has been the case his entire career, it was Marquez’s accuracy that appeared to make a difference — he landed 52 percent of his punches to just 31 percent for Katsidis, according to ringside stats.
