Jamel Herring vs. Masayuki Ito
The fact that Ito scored a seventh-round technical knockout over Evgeny Chuprakov in his first and only title defense will inspire confidence in his ability for this fight. By contrast, Herring has been much more impressive after dropping down in weight class.
World Boxing Organization World Super Featherweight Title
Jamel Herring faces a daunting task in his upcoming WBO world super featherweight title bout against Masayuki Ito. Herring is 33 years old and is ranked 57th in the world. The southpaw stands at five feet 10 inches tall with a reach of 70 inches. He is a native of New York that now resides in Cincinnati, Ohio. Herring has won his last three fights in a row after a bad stretch in which he lost two out of three.
This will be the first-ever championship fight for Herring, a former US Olympian. After a couple of losses at the 135-division, Herring moved down to 130 pounds and has been far more impressive there. Herring has the distinction of serving two tours of duty in Iraq as a US Marine where he was a field electrician. He turned pro in 2012 and won the first 15 bouts of his career.
Masayuki Ito is 28 years old and is ranked eighth in the world. Ito is a native of Tokyo, Japan where he still resides. He stands at five feet, 8.5 inches tall with a reach of 70.5 inches and fights from an orthodox stance. This upcoming bout against Herrig will be the second title defense by Ito since the won the belt against Christopher Diaz on July 28, 2018. The win over Diaz caught a lot of gamblers and boxing aficionados off guard. It was Ito’s United States debut after having all of his previous fights in Japan.
This championship fight between Ito and Herring has been months in the making but Top Rank was delayed in announcing the fight due to waiting on approval from the World Boxing Organization. There were also concerns about Herring not being in the top 15 and yet getting a shot at a title belt.
What is perhaps the most interesting note about this fight is the expected attendance of Miguel Berchelt, who is the current World Boxing Council title belt, holder. Berchelt stated after his May 11 win over Francisco Vargas that he wanted a unification title fight.
