On December 2, 2016 Miguel Berchelt faced Francisco Vargas for Vargas’ World Boxing Council super featherweight title belt. The fight took place in Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. After Berchelt and Vargas traded punches in the early rounds the challenger began to take over the fight and dominate the defending champion. Finally, at the 2:19 mark of the 11th round the fight was stopped with Berchelt taking away the belt from Vargas. While Berchelt was gracious in victory and praised Vargas, the defeated champion complained about the fight being called due to cuts that he suffered. He immediately called for a rematch and after over two years of waiting he finally gets it.

Francisco Vargas has a career record of 25-1-2 with a total of 18 knockout wins and one knockout loss for his career. Vargas has taken over a year off with his last bout taking place on April 12, 2018 when defeated Rod Salka by RTD in the sixth round of a scheduled 10 round bout. That bout also took place at the Fantasy Springs Casino at Indio. Prior to that Vargas defeated Stephen Smith on December 9, 2017 in a technical decision that took place in the ninth round of a scheduled 10 round bout with the venue being the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino Events Center in Las Vegas. Those are the only two fights he has taken part in since the defeat to Berchelt.

Since his upset win over Vargas, Berchelt has successfully defended his title belt four times with wins over Takashi Miura, Maxwell Awuku, Jonathan Victor Barros, and Miguel Roman. His last bout was against Roman on November 3, 2018 that took place at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. Berchelt scored a ninth-round technical knockout win.
