Odds Analysis

In August, a surge of action on McGregor moved the money lines to +435 for McGregor, with -672 for Mayweather. Vegas is reporting large single bets as well as high volume of smaller bets on the Irishman. The man obviously knows how to sell his confidence.

Matchup Breakdown

Let’s think rationally for a second. Mayweather is 49-0 and considered one of the greatest boxers of all-time. His defensive skill might just be the best in history - the man is nearly impossible to hit with boxing gloves.

There are a few real factors we can hold against “Money” in this fight. He’s 40 years old, an age far past anyone’s athletic prime. He’s fought most of his career at 147 pounds, while McGregor has competed at 170 pounds before. Lastly, Mayweather has historically had trouble with southpaws like the Irishman.

McGregor fans will argue that he has special power. We’ve seen him floor dudes with a single left cross. His timing, movement and accuracy in MMA is some of the best in the sport. He’s young (just 29 years old) and hungry. “A puncher’s chance” is a real thing with a guy like this.

But at the same time, McGregor has never competed in boxing at any level. Not even as an amateur. He took up boxing as a teen before moving quickly into MMA. And although he’s training with boxers in preparation for this matchup, that cannot bridge the massive experience gap here.

But McGregor’s confidence is astronomically high and his ego has its own orbit. Though this may feel like a money grab, one gets the sense that McGregor actually feels like he can win. It’s going to be a lot of fun watching him try - and the power he wields in his left will make the fight compelling as long as he’s standing.
