MLB Sunday Night Baseball Betting

An interleague matchup between playoff contenders brings the Fourth of July weekend to a close when the Texas Rangers visit the San Diego Padres in a special edition of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. First pitch is slated for 9:10 p.m. ET from PETCO Park in San Diego on July 6. Both teams entered the week on the outside of the wild card picture but are among a large group of postseason hopefuls in each league. Going back to the 2018 season the Padres have dominated the series winning 13 of the last 14 encounters and outscoring the Rangers 37-17 while winning the last six games in San Diego. If the pitching rotations stay on schedule the Rangers will send Patrick Corbin to the mound against recently recalled Matt Waldron for the Padres.

Despite their limited history there are some notable developments between the clubs. On April 9, 2021, Joe Musgrove threw the first no-hitter in Padres history blanking the Rangers, 3-0. Texas manager Bruce Bochy played on San Diego’s first World Series team in 1984 and later became the winningest manager in club history.

There will be plenty of betting options for the Sunday Night Baseball interleague showdown between Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres.

Texas Rangers at San Diego Padres, 9:10 PM ET (ESPN)

The Rangers landed themselves in a big hole at the start of the season with the help of a punchless offense. They were forced to make a change in May before it was too late firing hitting coach Donnie Ecker and replacing him with Bret Boone. Many pundits had the Rangers as the team to beat in the AL West with favorable World Series odds. But at the time of the change they were next to last in MLB in runs scored despite having the fourth lowest staff ERA. There has been improvement, but it’s a slow process. The Rangers enter the week with a record of 42-44, 9.5 games out of first place and 2.5 games behind Seattle for the third wild card spot. The Rangers rank in the bottom third in MLB in most offensive categories including runs/game and OPS. They are 27th with a team batting average below .230. Many scoffed at the acquisition of Jacob deGrom, who was thought to be damaged goods. However, the former Cy Young winner is showing he still has it anchoring the best staff in baseball going 9-2 with a 2.13 ERA across 17 starts.

The Padres have had to rely on young arms to combat the absence of starters Musgrove, Yu Darvish and Michael King. One of those arms belongs to rookie Ryan Bergert, who posted a 2.67 ERA in nine appearances. Unfortunately he took a line drive off his arm and was recently placed on the IL further depleting the staff. And it’s been a month-long struggle offensively for the Pads. Not long ago they led MLB in batting thanks to hot starts by Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado. However, they’ve cooled off and the clubs slipped to the middle of the pack in hitting. The Pads also rank 22nd in scoring and 27th in home runs, which has helped them cash the UNDER 47 times in 84 games. Both teams have talent to be much better offensively.
