It took 162 games to determine the playoff field and seedings for the 2025 MLB Playoffs, but we finally reached the end to a thrilling regular season. Hopefully the postseason is just as exciting. The Dodgers were the futures odds favorite all year, and while the gap in the market closed down the stretch and into the playoffs, the defending champs are still the team to beat on the odds board. There were some moments of doubt during the year, but the Dodgers are built for the postseason and closed the regular year with a flourish to win the NL West for the 12th time in 13 years. They ended the regular season winning 15 of 20 games.

Another team that closed the year in style was Seattle claiming its first division title in a quarter of a century. Behind MVP candidate Cal Raleigh the Mariners went 17-1 during an 18-game stretch in September to overtake Houston in the AL West knocking the Astros out of the postseason. The M’s came in as the second favorite behind the Dodgers. The odds board is tight, though, with five teams boasting shorter than 8/1 odds. A couple of lengthy winning streaks during the season lifted the Brewers to the best record in the majors and they’ll have home field throughout the playoffs.

The Mets completed their collapse going 7-14 over their final 21 games with Sunday’s loss to Miami eliminating them. Cincinnati claimed the final wild card spot in the NL. At least one New York team will be playing in October. The Yankees didn’t win the AL East but a strong finish made it fun. They had the same record as the No. 1 seed Blue Jays but lost the tie breaker. Philadelphia moved ahead to the divisional round by finishing second in the NL just one game behind Milwaukee. Five of the six NL playoff teams won at least 90 games while three in the AL reached that number. Surprisingly one of them wasn’t Detroit. The Tigers cratered down the stretch and were overtaken in the AL Central by Cleveland. But at least they qualified for the playoffs and have a chance to redeem themselves.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers closed the season strong and will head to the postseason as the favorite to repeat as World Series champions. There were some struggles during the year, but they hit another gear winning 15 of 20 games to end the season. The biggest concern for LA is the bullpen, which had the second highest ERA among playoff teams. Relievers tossed the most innings of any team during the season posting a 4.27 ERA while blowing 27 saves. Starting pitching is strong and the Dodgers ranked among the top 5 in several key offensive stat categories.

Seattle Mariners

Hopefully for Seattle a weekend sweep by the Dodgers doesn’t affect them going into the playoffs. Before that the M’s were scorching hot winning 17 of 18 games to claim their first division title since 2001. Getting a first round bye should help the pitching staff, especially Bryan Woo, who left his last start with a pectoral injury. Woo had a phenomenal season going 15-7 with a 2.94 ERA and 21 quality starts. Cal Raleigh anchors an offense that had the third-most home runs in MLB. Raleigh led MLB with 60 bombs and had 125 RBIs.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phils have a complete squad with a potent offense. And they got Trea Turner back in the lineup just ahead of the postseason. Turner missed nearly the entire month of September with a hamstring injury returning to play in Sunday’s finale to get some work. The loss of Zack Wheeler didn’t affect the pitching staff. Jesus Luzardo (15), Cristopher Sanchez (13) and Ranger Suarez (12) all reached double figures in wins and Jhoan Duran took over as the closer following his deadline acquisition.

New York Yankees

An 8-game winning streak to close the regular season helped the Yankees tie Toronto for the best record in the AL. Unfortunately they lost the tie-breaker and will instead host Boston in the wild card round. Everything clicked for New York down the stretch with Max Fried and Carlos Rodon delivering quality starts and Aaron Judge boosting the offense. With seven scoreless outings in his last eight, David Bednar has solidified the back end of the bullpen.

Milwaukee Brewers

It’s hard to flip the switch after being in cruise control for so long. The Brewers won their final regular season game giving them a 12-12 record in September. They played so well leading up to that point building a big enough lead to withstand a lackluster level of play. They also earned home field advantage, which is crucial. The Brewers won 52 home games and will get every contender in their own yard. Philadelphia, LA, San Diego and the Cubs all won at least 50 home games.
