Peter Pan Stakes betting odds on Saturday

horse-racing_11.ar

Generally speaking, the winner of the Peter Pan Stakes will head to the Belmont Stakes in a few weeks.

This year though, there is no telling what could happen with the winner of this race, knowing that only five three-year old colts have entered this field.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Madefromlucky is very likely to end up being the favorite in this race, and because of the size of the field, he could be the odds-on favorite as well. Tiz Shea D is the only other colt with better than a 6.00 power rating, and there is definitely some justification here.

Madefromlucky was the 5 to 1 second choice at the Rebel Stakes in March, which gives him the most impressive price at any point of any colt in this field.

Tiz Shea D was the fourth choice at the Wood Memorial at 6 to 1, but he was a fifth place finisher that day and put up just an 83 Beyer Speed Rating.

FAVORITE TO FOLLOW

This race is all about Madefromlucky. We know that the distance of 1 1/8 miles isn't going to be a problem, as that was a favorite distance of his daddy, Lookin at Lucky.

We're a bit concerned for Madefromlucky, knowing that Todd Pletcher has a lot of other great three-year old colts he is training this year, but this race suits him perfectly.

It is obvious that Madefromlucky isn't going to be the lead dog in this race at the outset, but he could end up being a big factor late on with his late push. Belmont Park is setup perfectly for a late surge, and that could be exactly what we get from Madefromlucky on Saturday.

UNDERDOG TO WATCH

Wolf Man Rocket could be an interesting proposition in this race. He won his last outing at the Northern Spur, and he did so with ease by 1 3/4 lengths. He looked like he wanted to run a lot longer than just the one mile and 50 yards he ran that day. It's a big jump for him to run at 1 1/8 miles, but trainer Bob Baffert wouldn't have brought Wolf Man Rocket here if he didn't think that he could win this race and ultimately contend at the Belmont.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

These small fields are really tough to handicap because the odds are going to be so tight. No colt will be even 10 to 1 in this race in all likelihood.

What we really don't know is where the speed is coming from. Two Weeks Off feels like he should be the leader around the first turn, but it's tough to rely upon a colt who’s never run a race at a mile in his career.

Conquest Curlinate is a highly touted colt thanks to his breeding, but he hasn't won a major race in his career and would be a real stretch to end up heading to the Belmont Stakes.

That's why Madefromlucky is the only colt who really makes any sense in this one. Maybe we'll see a decent push from Tiz Shea D and Wolf Man Rocket, but in the end, Madefromlucky was the only colt we saw of these five who looked like he could run in a Triple Crown race. Back him accordingly, though don't expect a huge payout.
