Kentucky Derby Matchups and Props

2018-Horses-Kentucky-Derby-Props-preview-Betting-Lines

If you want to do more than just bet on which horse you think will win the Kentucky Derby, you may want to consider betting Kentucky Derby matchups and props. The matchups are similar to what you see in golf, as you just worry about your horse beating another horse. When it comes to props, one of the most popular ones to bet before the Kentucky Derby is whether or not any horse will win the Triple Crown. Let’s look at Kentucky Derby matchups and props.

Bet the Kentucky Derby

Kentucky Derby Matchups

Justify -190 vs. Magnum Moon

If you like Justify in the Kentucky Derby you are probably better off betting the horse to win, as you can get him at odds of more than 4-1 right now. This price seems high against a quality horse in Magnum Moon.
Justify -155 vs. Good Magic

This price is more reasonable on Justify in this matchup and you also get the benefit of going against a horse in Good Magic who has not trained well leading up to the Derby. I like Justify in this matchup and this price.

Mendelssohn -120 vs. Magnum Moon
This matchup looks like a total crapshoot, as Mendelssohn is a shipper who could win the race or finish last. This is not a matchup I would bet.

Audible -130 vs. Bolt d’Oro
This is another difficult matchup to predict, as both horses are given almost equal chances to win the Derby.

Good Magic -135 vs. Magnum Moon
I am not sure why Good Magic is getting so much respect in the matchups. I am not sure what to expect from Magnum Moon, so this is a pass.

Hofburg -160 vs. Free Drop Billy
This is a matchup between two longshots, neither of which I really like, so I will pass.

Vino Rosso -115 vs. My Boy Jack
I actually like both of these two horses as longshots, so I will pass on this matchup.

Enticed -120 vs. Flameaway
This seems like a short price on Enticed, who looks to have a better chance of winning this race than Flameaway.

Lone Sailor -140 vs. Bravazo
This is another matchup between longshots that I really don’t like.

Noble Indy -115 vs. Solomini
These are two longshots that could crash the party and hit the board on Saturday. I give a slight edge to Solomini.

Firenze Fire -135 vs. Promises Fulfilled
I give the edge to Firenze Fire in this matchup, but the danger is that the horse drops like a rock after leading for most of the race.

Good Magic -135 vs. Bolt d’Oro
I don’t get the price on this matchup at all, as Bolt d’Oro is the better horse and he is listed at lower odds to win the Derby. I like Bolt d’Oro in this matchup.

Kentucky Derby Props

Will a Horse win the 2018 Triple Crown?

Yes +600
No -900

The price on the No is definitely steep, but that is the only way I would go on this prop, as the only horse to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978 was American Pharoah in 2015. The interesting part about this prop and why you may want to wait is that the price should be lower on the No after the Kentucky Derby.

Will Any Horse Win at Least Two Triple Crown Races?

Yes +200
No -300

The value on this prop would seem to be on the No, as it is much cheaper than the prop on a horse winning all three races. The drawback is that we have seen a number of horses win the first two races of the Triple Crown and then lose the Belmont.

Will The Kentucky Derby Winner Lead Wire To Wire?

Yes +450
No -800

It is hard to envision any horse winning the Kentucky Derby wire-to-wire. What makes it even more difficult this year is that the horse on the rail, Firenze Fire is not considered a serious threat and yet he is a speed horse that should get the lead. The No is the only way to go on this prop because if you like the Yes you should probably just take Firenze Fire to win the Derby at odds of 50-1.
