The American League in 2024 looks to be wide-open with six teams listed at single-digit odds. The New York Yankees added Juan Soto to what should be a potent lineup led by Aaron Judge, but the Yankees were a major disappointment a year ago and there are no guarantees the Bronx Bombers will win the AL this season. The Houston Astros are a perennial World Series contender and they are right with the Yankees as early favorites in MLB betting odds to win the American League Pennant. The Baltimore Orioles actually won more games last season than any other American League team and yet they are listed behind the Yankees and the Astros in American League Pennant odds. The Orioles went out and got one of the best pitchers in the game in Corbin Burnes, so Baltimore could be undervalued this season. The defending American League champions and defending World Series champions are the Texas Rangers. They are getting even less respect than the Orioles. Texas does have some starting pitching questions, as two of their top pitchers, Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer will start the season on the injured list.

Just behind the top four in terms of American League Pennant odds are the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. The Mariners made a number of moves in the off-season but whether any of them will matter is a big question, as general manager Jerry Dipoto seems more intent on shedding payroll than he is on upgrading the talent on his team. The Blue Jays remain inconsistent but there is still a lot to like about Toronto, especially with a potent lineup that should be even better with the addition of Justin Turner.

The rest of the teams in the American League are either darkhorses or longshots. Someone has to win the AL Central so perhaps the Minnesota Twins are worth a look in MLB futures. It is always possible that the Tampa Bay Rays sneak into the playoffs, as Tampa finds a way to win every season and not to be ruled out as darkhorse contenders are the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians. The Detroit Tigers are another possible darkhorse contender, as Detroit made a number of good off-season moves. The Kansas City Royals also made some off-season additions that could help, but they still look to be in the longshot category. The hopeless category looks to be the Los Angeles Angels, Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics.
