Some of the best bets in the NFL each week are oftentimes wagers on teams that are considered the worst in the league. If you want to win money betting NFL games then you need to be willing to take teams no one else wants to bet. We refer to these teams as ugly dogs and you really have to hold your nose sometimes when you bet on them, but history has shown that going against the public works. Let me point out one fact that you are probably already aware of. When you bet these games, you are usually better off waiting until Sunday morning to make your wagers because you will probably get a better number than what I list from earlier in the week.
Miami Dolphins +7.5 vs. Baltimore Ravens
We had the Thursday night game a week ago and the Jets were completely outplayed by Indianapolis yet they were a tipped pass away from covering the number. This week we have another ugly dog on Thursday night, as we take the Miami Dolphins plus the points against Baltimore. The Dolphins did get a win last week, but it wasn’t pretty against the hapless Texans. The Ravens do not have a good defense, so Miami may be able to put some points on the board and keep this one close. We’ll take the Dolphins plus the points as an ugly dog.
Jacksonville Jaguars+10.5 at Indianapolis Colts
The Jaguars delivered last week in one of the biggest upsets of the season, as they beat the Buffalo Bills. This is almost the same situation for Jacksonville, as they play a better team in the Colts. The Jaguars are still not a good team and despite last week’s win, they are still poorly coached. The Colts are also poorly coached by Frank Reich and this Indianapolis team is overrated. We’ll take the Jaguars once again as an ugly dog.
New York Jets +13 vs. Buffalo Bills
The Jets were awful for much of the game last week against the Colts and still nearly covered the spread. You would think this week would be a terrible spot for them against a Buffalo team coming off a loss against an inferior team. It is hard to fathom what happened to the Bills last week and it is really hard to see them playing poorly two weeks in a row. That is the point of this column, as we take ugly dogs and the Jets definitely fit that criterion this week. We take the Jets plus the points in this one.
Washington Football Team +9.5 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Washington is a team going nowhere this season and it is obvious they have problems on both sides of the ball. They were supposed to be good on defense, but this season they can’t stop anyone. The offense has been up and down and it is really hard to see how they keep this one close against Brady and the Bucs. This is definitely an ugly dog play as we take Washington plus the points.
Detroit Lions +9 at Pittsburgh Steelers
The Lions have the worst record in the NFL but you would think that somewhere along the way they will get their first win. One thing we know about Mike Tomlin’s teams is that they historically play down to the level of their competition. They did it last week against the Bears and nearly lost the game and now they have a short week and take on a winless Detroit team. Could this be where the Lions surprise everyone and get their first win? We’ll take the points with Detroit as an ugly dog.
