Yonkers Raceway was founded in 1899 under the name Empire City Race Track. The one-mile track is located in Yonkers, New York and hosts standardbred harness racing year-round. The Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway also offers slot machine betting and video gaming machines. Throughout its 116 years in existence, Yonkers Raceway has undergone many changes including new management and a facelift, but the raceway remains a staple in New York. The champion thoroughbred horse Seabiscuit is among one of the biggest names to come through Yonkers. Seabiscuit won the Scarsdale Handicap at Yonkers Raceway, then Empire City, in 1936. Seabiscuit is just one of several impressive horses that have participates at Yonkers.
The length down the stretch is 660 feet and the width is 98 feet. There are eight starters behind the gate and the track has a speed rating of 2:00. Races run five nights a week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in 2015. Some of the more notable events hosted at Yonkers Raceway include the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series, Blue Chip Matchmaker and the Yonkers Trot. The facility also offers simulcasting from harness and thoroughbred venues around the world year-round, so even when there is not live racing, bettors can get in on the other action in horse race gambling.
