The New York Racing Association is one of the most powerful racing entities in the entire world, and Aqueduct is one of the key tracks in the association. Any time you try to beat the horse racing betting lines in the winter or the spring, you know that you can find some great racing at Aqueduct Racetrack. The season at Aqueduct starts in October or November, and it runs right through the start of the Triple Crown season when Belmont Park opens at the track that is just eight miles away in Elmont, New York.

Weather is always worth considering at Aqueduct, as races in the beginning of the season are often run in poor conditions. You never know how horses are going to react when they don't have a history of running in winter conditions, so longshots often times pay off on the horse racing gambling lines.

However, the races that really matter are the ones that are run right at the beginning of the meet and right at the end of it.

The Gazelle Stakes and the Cigar Mile Handicap are both big Grade 1 races. The Gazelle Stakes is often run right at the beginning of the season, and it is often a race which helps fillies get into the Breeders' Cup. The Cigar Mile Handicap, once known as the NYRA Mile, is usually the first race for ponies who run in one of the various mile-long races in the Breeders' Cup. Traditionally, this race is held right at the end of November, often times the weekend of Thanksgiving.

The Gotham Stakes and the Wood Memorial are the two biggest races of the year though, and they essentially end the year at Aqueduct before Belmont Park opens up.

The Gotham Stakes is only a Grade 3 race, but all too often, the colt who beats the horse racing wagering lines in this one is on his way to the Kentucky Derby. For sure, whoever wins the Gotham Stakes is going to be the favorite at the Wood Memorial, which is the final prep race and the most valuable prep race for the Kentucky Derby. With virtually no exception, the winner of the Wood will head to the Run for the Roses.

In totality, there are three Grade 1 races, 10 Grade 2 races, and 23 Grade 3 races in the six-month meet, and that's a tremendous number of graded stakes races for any track to have, especially one that is just a winter/spring track.
