The Match 2024 Golf Betting

The ninth edition of “The Match” will feature Rory McIlroy, Max Homa, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang. It is scheduled for Monday, February 26 at Park City Municipal Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida. The competition will be a 12-hole skins game, so there will be no teams. It will be the first edition of “The Match” that will feature LPGA Tour players. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time and can be seen on TNT, truTV and HLN. Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley will be the broadcasters with 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman doing commentary. Kathryn Tappen will be on the course following the four golfers and also involved in the broadcast will be three-time LPGA champion Christina Kim, Grammy winner DJ Khaled and NHL analyst Paul Bissonnette. This edition of “The Match” will support the youth organization First Tee. “The Match” history goes all the way back to 2018 when it was Tiger Woods taking on Phil Mickelson. This year’s format will be a mixed skins format with each of the 12 holes worth a specific amount for charity, so the players will be competing against one another and not on teams. The four par-3 holes will have all four golfers hitting from the same tee box. The other eight holes will have one tee box for the men and another for the women with different yardages for the men and the women. The winner will be the player who wins the most skins over the 12 holes.

Golf Betting Odds

This event is not a team event so the player who wins the most skins will be declared the winner. McIlroy is the logical choice to be favored in golf betting odds, as he is the highest-ranked golfer among the four and he has the most experience. The question for bettors is how to treat the two women golfers who will be hitting from shorter distances on most of the holes. McIlroy has 38 worldwide wins, while Homa is a six-time PGA Tour winner. Thompson has won 11 times on the LPGA Tour and played in six Solheim Cups. Zhang made her professional debut last June and won the Mizuho Americas Open. She was the NCAA Women’s golf champion in 2022 and 2023.

The first edition of The Match took place in 2018 and it was Mickelson defeating Tiger Woods in a match that took four playoff holes to decide. Despite the star power, The Match featured poor overall play and technical issues that caused a planned pay-per-view event to be broadcast for free.

The rematch between Mickelson and Woods in 2020 took place in Florida and had each player taking a partner, as Woods was paired with Peyton Manning, while Mickelson played with Tom Brady. Woods and Manning got out to a big lead and held on to win by one hole.

The third edition took place late in 2020 and had Mickelson pairing with Charles Barkley and they took on the team of Manning and Stephen Curry. It was not much of a contest, as Mickelson was the only pro golfer in the contest and his team won 4 and 3. The fourth edition featured Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers going up against Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady. The match was tied after nine holes but DeChambeau and Rodgers pulled away on the back nine to win by three shots.

The fifth edition of The Match had Brooks Koepka taking on Bryson DeChambeau. The two had an ongoing feud and it was thought the event would be popular with viewers, but having it take place in the month of November was a mistake. The Match was played over 12 holes and Koepka won four of the first eight holes and the match was conceded on the ninth hole.

The sixth edition of the Match had NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers taking on Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. Brady and Rodgers ended up winning the event by just one hole. The match came down to the final putt with Rodgers sinking the winning putt, while Allen just missed a long birdie putt that would have sent the match to a playoff.

The seventh edition of the Match had four pro golfers, as Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy faced Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. The event was kind of a letdown, as Woods was still recovering from injuries sustained in a 2021 car crash and the team of Woods and McIlroy was beaten by Thomas and Spieth 3 and 2.

The eighth edition of the Match had two NFL players, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, taking on two NBA players, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors. It was not much of a contest, as Mahomes and Kelce won easily. It was also the least-watched Match in history.
