The most disappointing team in the first season of the Overwatch League was Seoul Dynasty. Seoul was the favorite to win the first Overwatch League championship before the first games were played, and no one questioned that title. Six of the eight players from the team seen as the best in the world, Lunatic-Hai, were signed by the Dynasty, and they won the APEX Season 2 and Season 3 titles together. However, they failed to live up to expectations and Seoul seemed to regress over the course of the year. It’s hard to feel confident in their chances coming into this year following such a letdown.

Seoul Dynasty Owners

Korea has one of the best Esports scenes in the world, so it was no surprise to see a group from Korea buy into the Overwatch League. The spot was purchased by a relatively new player in the Esports world, Gen. G., and they have been big spenders in both Overwatch and League of Legends, the two biggest Esports markets. Gen. G was originally called KSV, and that acronym came from merging Korea and Silicon Valley.

Seoul Dynasty 2018 Year in Review

The Dynasty looked the part of the favorite in the preseason. They smashed the New York Excelsior, Dallas Fuel, and Shanghai Dragons, dropping just two maps in those three matches. Seoul began Stage One with a 5-0 record, but things started to fall apart after a loss to NYXL. The Dynasty suffered stunning defeats where they didn’t win a map against the Los Angeles Valiant and the London Spitfire, and they were taken to five games in their two wins. That led to the Dynasty missing out on the Stage One Playoffs despite a 7-3 record due to a poor game score.

It was more of the same in Stage Two as there were rumors of internal squabbles and the team was not able to build any real chemistry. The coaches were constantly changing up lineups during games, and it became clear that Seoul did not like playing with one another. They went 7-3 and missed on the Stage Two Playoffs due to game score yet again, and then the wheels came off completely in the last two stages.

Seoul went 5-5 in Stage Three and a 3-7 record in Stage Four meant that they were not even one of the six teams to qualify for the Overwatch League Playoffs. It was a shocking turn of events for the team that most pegged as the best coming into 2018.

Seoul Dynasty Roster

Following a disastrous inaugural season, it was clear that the Dynasty needed to clean house and they did just that. Seoul parted ways with seven players at the end of the year, and they brought in a number of fresh faces to pair with the five players they decided to keep.

Although the first year went poorly, RyuJehong certainly wasn’t to blame. The team captain and support that many considered to be the best in the world was very solid. He sometimes overcommitted because he felt like he had to do too much, but he returns along with Tobi. Jecse was signed to provide depth in support.

Seoul brought back one of the best DPS players in the league too. Fleta is one of the best hit-scan players in the world, and his Widowmaker is something to be feared. He was incredible on Brigitte in leading Korea to their third straight victory at the Overwatch World Cup too. Munchkin is back for another year and will pair with Fleta often, while Fits was added for depth.

Tank play was to blame for a good portion of Seoul’s woes last year, and the Dynasty really looked to shore this position up. Zunba is an off-tank and returns, but the other three members are new. Fissure was a fantastic main tank on the Los Angeles Gladiators (even though he needed resources), and both Marve1 and Michelle show a lot of promise.

Seoul Dynasty 2019 Preview

I’m more intrigued about Seoul this year than any other team. The Dynasty certainly have the talent to compete for the title, but they must develop chemistry and stop the constant changes that frustrated multiple players in 2018.
