No team was more consistent than the New York Excelsior over the course of the first season of the Overwatch League. NYXL were the only team to qualify for the playoffs in each of the four stages, and it quickly became clear that they had the best collection of talent of any team in the league. They came into the first Overwatch League Playoffs as the No. 1 seed and an odds-on favorite to be crowned as the first champions, but they were stunned in the Semifinals. NYXL have to be seen as one of the favorites coming into this year, and they will be out to win it all in 2019.

New York Excelsior Owners

Jeff Wilpon, COO of the New York Mets, owns the New York Excelsior. This is Wilpon’s first Esports team, and unlike what we have seen him do as the COO of the Mets, he has taken a very hands-off approach with NYXL. He has entrusted the team to former LW Red and Blue coach Pavane.

New York Excelsior 2018 Year in Review

NYXL were incredible throughout the inaugural season of the Overwatch League. They finished with a record of 34-6, and they finished with seven more wins than any other team in the league.

In Stage One, NYXL went 9-1, but they were upset in five games in the Stage One Finals by the London Spitfire. They finished with the same record in Stage Two, yet this time they were able to win their first stage title by knocking off the Philadelphia Fusion to win the Stage Two Playoffs.

For the third straight split, NYXL finished 9-1 in Stage Three, and they swept previously undefeated Boston Uprising in the playoffs to win their second straight stage finals. However, it was another second place finish in Stage Four. Still, the fact that NYXL made every stage finals in their inaugural season was a cause for celebration.

NYXL were the odds-on favorite to win the Overwatch League Playoffs, but they were stunned by the Philadelphia Fusion in the semifinals. The Fusion were heavy underdogs entering that series, yet the time off seemed to affect NYXL’s chemistry, so they missed out on the finals for the first time yet.

New York Excelsior Roster

Given their success in the inaugural season, you can’t fault NYXL for deciding to run it back. They did part ways with one of their main tanks, Janus, and some members of the coaching staff, but the rest of last year’s roster is back in action.

This is one of the best sets of DPS players in the Overwatch League. Saebyeolbe is one of the best Tracer players the game has ever seen, and his flexibility to jump on a range champion makes him even more incredible. Libero is great as a DPS flex player, and Pine is the most exciting player in the league. Pine did not always start in his first season with NYXL, but he often led the highlight reel every week. His gun skills on McCree and Widowmaker are god-tier.

The tank play is rock solid too. MekO and Mano had great chemistry together, and they played off each other very well. Mano is the main tank, while MekO is the flex, but they have the ability to swap if needed.

What really set this team apart last year was its support play. We were largely in a support meta in 2018, and JJoNak and ArK quickly showed that they were the best support tandem in the league. JJoNak was named the league’s MVP in its inaugural season because of his Zenyatta play, and ArK has proven to complement him very well.

NYXL brought Fl0w3R and Nenne up from their developmental team prior to the start of this season, so it’s still very much an in-house team.

New York Excelsior 2019 Preview

Even though NYXL ended up crashing and burning in the postseason, they are the favorites to win the second Overwatch League season. They were the most impressive team throughout the league’s inaugural season, and all the stars are back for one more year. NYXL will be a tough team to beat, and they have two more roster spots available if they want to make changes.
