When he announced he was going to be starting up the program in the United States, a move which corresponded with his departure from American Idol, he left Britain without Nicole Scherzinger and others to judge. Scherzinger was a judge both in England and in the United States. When The X Factor was cancelled in the United States, Cowell went back to do the show in England, and he's been there ever since. The upcoming series of The X Factor in Great Britain will be the 13th in the series.
The X Factor isn't dissimilar to American Idol in that there are open auditions and a vetting process of acts from recorded auditions to live performances. The difference between American Idol and The X Factor is that both individuals and groups can audition.
