Horse Racing Odds - Peter Pan Stakes Race Preview

Peter-Pan-Stakes-Odds

The winner of the Peter Pan Stakes often goes on to run in the Belmont Stakes and usually has a legitimate chance to win the race. That's why Saturday's race is going to be incredibly important in the Triple Crown chase even though no one is running in this race that ran in the Kentucky Derby.

ODDS ANALYSIS

1: Supah Czech 30/1
2: Singleton 20/1
3: Adventist 4/1
4: Decorated Soldier 6/1
5: Governor Malibu 10/1
6: Wild About Deb 8/1
7: Unified 4/5
8: Lost Iron 15/1

Unified hasn't raced much in his career, but he's the odds-on favorite here to win the Peter Pan Stakes at 4 to 5.

Adventist had a shot to reach the Kentucky Derby, but he couldn't finish better than third in any of the Withers Stakes, Gotham Stakes or Wood Memorial Stakes, and that's why he was just left here in New York to race in the Peter Pan. He's a 4 to 1 second choice just in front of Decorated Soldier and Wild About Deb at 6 and 8 to 1 respectively. The other four three-year olds in this field are double-digit underdogs.

FAVORITE TO FOLLOW

Unified is a tricky pony to try to follow here at the Peter Pan. He's only run two races in his career, a maiden race at Gulfstream Park in February and the Bay Shore Stakes in April at Aqueduct.

There's no doubt that his Beyer Speed Ratings of 100 and 107 are more impressive than those of any other three-year old in the world, including Nyquist. But the sample set is small, and the distances he's run have been just six and seven furlongs. He'll have to cover a lot more than that here at the Peter Pan, and even if he does go on to win, the 1 1/2-mile marathon that is the Belmont Stakes could be too much for Unified to overcome.

UNDERDOG TO WATCH

Wild About Deb is a really dangerous underdog here. He's got Eskendereya and Giant's Causeway in his bloodlines, and he's coming off of a maiden race at 1 1/8 miles in the slop at Santa Anita which he won by six lengths. If he can turn a 99 Beyer Speed Rating again in this one, he's got a real shot of pulling off this upset in a field which isn't all that deep.

QUICK PICK

Adventist needs to prove to us that he can do anything more than finish third before we're willing to back him in any race, and though we do know that Unified is the best horse in this field, should he really be the odds-on choice after running just two races in his career? We're not so sure.

Wild About Deb doesn't have a big name jockey, nor does he have any wins (or even races) in graded stakes races, but we think he has a real shot to get the job done here. He's the horse most likely to go on to win the Peter Pan and the Belmont Stakes as we see it just because he's used to running at this type of a distance and has fantastic breeding. This price of 8 to 1 is just too good to miss.
