Saul Alvarez has a professional record of 45-1-1 in his career and has captured 35 of those wins by knockout. The 25-year-old comes into this bout against Cotto with a three-fight winning streak and will be looking to extend. In his most recent appearance in the ring in May 2015, Alvarez defeated James Kirkland in a third-round knockout. He also has recent victories over Erislandy Lara and Alfredo Angulo. Alvarez started his career with a record of 42-0-1 before suffering his first and only loss of his career in September 2013 when he fell to Floyd Mayweather, Jr. by majority decision. Alvarez is the former WBC, WBA (Regular) and The Ring magazine light middleweight champion and has also defeated former world champion Shane Mosley. Alvarez stands two inches taller than Cotto and also possesses a three-and-a-half reach advantage over him.
Miguel Cotto comes into this bout with a record of 40-4, winning 33 of his fights by knockout and boasting a 75 percent knockout percentage. Cotto also has three-fight winning streak coming into this event and is fresh off a technical knockout win over Daniel Geale this summer where he retained the WBC, Lineal and The Ring Middleweight titles. He’ll put all three on the line for a second time against Alvarez. Cotto won the titles with a technical decision win over Sergio Gabriel Martinez in June of 2014.
Cotto’s recent winning streak also includes a win over Delvin Rodriguez and comes after a two-fight skid where he suffered back-to-back losses at the hands of Mayweather and Austin Trout in 2012. He lost both fights by decision. The 35-year-old has also lost to Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, but has notable victories over opponents like Shane Mosely and Michael Jennings. The Puerto Rican boxers started out as a junior welterweight fighter, then moved to welterweight and next to light middleweight before finally making the switch to the middleweight division in 2014. This bout against Alvarez will mark Cotto’s third as a middleweight. He made his professional debut in 2001 and won his first 32 bouts in a row before suffering his first loss in 2008. Since then, Cotto has gone 8-3 in the ring with seven knockout victories in boxing wagering.
