Heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum was originally scheduled to take on Cain Velasquez, but Velasquez withdrew from the event after suffering a back injury just two weeks prior to the fight. Stipe Miocic stepped in to fight Werdum in Velasquez instead but Werdum has withdrawn as well now, due to a foot injury and the bout has been scrapped.
Johny Hendricks comes into this one with a record of 17-3 and has defeated eight opponents by knockout. The former welterweight champion captured his most recent win by decision against Matt Brown last March after losing to the welterweight bout in a rematch with Robbie Lawler n his previous fight in late 2014. Hendricks last to Lawler by split decision. He has gone 2-2 in his last three bouts and will be eager to get another win at UFC Fight Night 82.
Stephen Thompson is 11-1 so far in his career. He is riding a five-fight winning streak coming into this bout and will be eager to get a chance to get a win against a former champion. Thompson captured his latest win last July, defeating Jake Ellenberger in a first round knockout. The 32-year-old’s only loss of his career came in 2012 when he fell by decision to Matt Brown.
Also fighting at UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson include are heavyweights Roy Nelson and Jared Rosholt. Rosholt is 14-2 coming into this bout and is currently riding a three-fight winning streak. He captured his most recent victory last November, defeating Stefan Struve by decision and also had wins over Timothy Johnson and Josh Copeland last year. The 29-year-old’s most recent loss was in November 2014 when he fell to Oleksiy Oliynyk in a first-round knockout. The Idaho native has gone 9-1 in his last ten bout and will look to keep his recent winning streak alive against Nelson.
Nelson has a record of 20-12 so far in his career and will be looking for a win after losing his last three bouts coming into this bout. In his most recent fight on September 27th, Nelson fell to Josh Barnett by decision. His most recent win came and his only victory in the last two years came in April 2014 when he defeated Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira in a first-round knockout. A win would be a big boost the 39-year-old so far.
UFC Fight Night 82 will also feature the lightweight bout between Josh Burkman (27-12) and K.J. Noons (13-8) and the welterweight showdown between Mike Pyle (26-11-1) and Sean Spencer (12-4) in UFC odds.
