2017-Horses-Local-Hero-Betting-LinesKentucky Derby Betting: There’s a lot to like about Solomini. He has hit the board in each of his four Grade 1 Stakes Race over the course of his career. However, he has yet to win since grabbing a victory in his maiden race.

Solomini finished second to Bolt d’Oro at his first Grade 1 Stakes Race, the FrontRunner Stakes. He was well off the pace, but he finished in second by a comfortable margin. Later in the year, he turned the tables on Bolt d’Oro, grabbing the Place at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile behind Good Magic. There, he edged out Bolt d’Oro by a length.

He went to Los Alamitos to compete after that and was rather unfairly disqualified after edging out McKinzie and Instilled Regard. Solomini was awarded third, as the judges ruled he initiated contact down the stretch.

This year, he has continued to impress. Solomini finished second to Magnum Moon at the Rebel Stakes, edging Combatant by a head. He followed that up with a third-place finish at the Arkansas Derby, finishing behind Magnum Moon and Quip.

The Kentucky Derby will go to post on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at 6:34 p.m. ET at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Catch the Kentucky Derby live on NBC.

Like two of the other contenders at the Kentucky Derby, Solomini is sired by Curlin. Curlin had an illustrious career as a racehorse and has been one of the best studs too. Solomini’s dam was Surf Song.

His trainer is the legendary Bob Baffert. Baffert has had a ton of success at the Kentucky Derby over the years, with nearly 40 percent of his horses hitting the board. His last win came in 2015 when American Pharaoh finished first.

Flavien Prat will be Solomini’s jockey for the Derby. Prat made his debut last year, finishing third on Battle of Midway.

Why Solomini Will Win the Kentucky Derby

Solomini has a lot of what I look for in a horse. He has been remarkably consistent over his career, hitting the board five out of five times in Graded Stakes.

The horse has also been able to do it at a number of racetracks. Solomini has finished in the top three at four different tracks, and that is a good sign.

Why Solomini Won't Win the Kentucky Derby

There are concerns about Solomini’s speed. He has twice finished with a speed rating of 100 or better, but he has topped out at 101. Additionally, he has been trending downward and checked in at 96 and 95 in his last two races.

The Final Verdict

I think there’s a good chance that Solomini surprises and ends up hitting the board. He might not win the Kentucky Derby, but I think betting the Win-Place-Show option with him could pay out nicely and I will be putting him in exotics.
