Soccer Odds - Sporting Kansas City vs. New York Red Bulls Match Preview

2017-MLS-Sporting-KC-vs.-New-York-Red-Bulls-(ESPN2)-Betting-Lines

Sporting Kansas City has been one of the most accomplished teams in the history of the U.S. Open Cup. The club has three championships to its honor and is going to be hoping to snare a fourth on Wednesday night. If SKC beats the New York Red Bulls, it'll become the third team in the MLS to win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup four times.

The U.S. Open Cup Final will go down Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at 9 p.m. ET at Children's Mercy Park. The match will be televised live on ESPN2.

Odds Analysis

The Western Conference in the MLS is a ridiculous dogfight right now. Sporting is sitting on 44 points in 28 matches, a mark that effectively leaves it second best on the table to Vancouver yet certainly within striking distance of winning the regular season conference title. Then again, there are only seven points separating the Whitecaps and the eighth place team in the conference, FC Dallas.

That said, Sporting Kansas City has to be the favorite in this one at home. The team is 9-5-0 this year at Children's Mercy Park, and a match of this magnitude is only going to open up the crowd a little bit more on Wednesday night.

New York, which is sitting in the last playoff spot in the East at the moment, has four wins away from home and is going to hope to break that mold across these 90 (or 120!) minutes.

How They Got Here

Sporting Kansas City has certainly had to take the hard road to get to this point in the competition. Way back in the middle of June, the team drew Minnesota United in the fourth round of playoff. After thrashing the Loons 4-0, KC went on the road to Houston where it took out the Dynamo 2-0.

The quarterfinals and semifinals were where things really got tough for Sporting. The team had to go into extra time to put away FC Dallas (though it ultimately did so with a three-goal explosion in the extra half hour of play), then needed penalties to stop San Jose to move onto the finale.

New York's journey hasn't been an easy one either. The Red Bulls have faced three MLS teams in New York City FC, Philadelphia and New England. All three matches have been tight, gritty affairs, as the team won 1-0, 1-1 (5-3) and 1-0 respectively.

That said, the semifinal against FC Cincinnati was a match to behold. Nippert Stadium was literally on fire with the Red Bulls coming to town, and the USL squad started off as brightly as could be with two goals onboard relatively early. New York fired back like a championship side and scored twice in the second half to draw level, and it finished the job in extra time to move onto the finale after one of the more emotional matches you'll see in a competition like this one.

Free Soccer Betting Pick

Even though Sporting Kansas City has one of the better defensive units in the MLS this year, we aren't sure that it has enough spark offensively (particularly since transferred Dom Dwyer to Orlando City) to get the job done in this one.

The Red Bulls are going to be huge underdogs, and we see that as a great opportunity more than anything else. With Sacha Kljestan and Bradley Wright-Phillips, RBNY has the greater attacking threat for sure. It's only going to take a moment of brilliance in all likelihood to put the Lamar Hunt Cup in the back of the one of these teams' vans, and the Red Bulls feel like the likelier side to have a moment of brilliance that can win a championship.

U.S. Open Cup Odds: New York Red Bulls 1, Sporting Kansas City 0
