Odds Analysis

The match between these two teams in the World Cup was supposed to be a relatively close run thing, but the Germans came out of the blocks full of sound and fury with a whopping five goals in the first half hour of play. Brazil ended up getting bounced 7-1, and it followed that up by losing to the Netherlands in the third place match.

This match is also expected to be a relatively closely run thing as well. The difference between that tournament two years ago and this one though, is the fact that this is a de facto U-23 competition, and Brazil's side really should be the strongest in the world, especially with the notable home pitch advantage at the Maracana.

Tournament Update

It wasn't always easy for Brazil, though. The team posted scoreless draws against both South Africa and Iraq, matches which left the hometown fans booing like crazy at the lack of offensive production. However, in the last group stage match of the bunch against Denmark – one which all of a sudden became a must-win match for the hosts, the Brazilians took care of the Danes 4-0. From there, Brazil has just continued dominating. The 2-0 win against Colombia was more impressive than the final score suggested, and the 6-0 win over Honduras was every bit as impressive as you might think.

Germany's defense was certainly questioned at the start of the Olympics. A team which generally plays a little more conservatively allowed five goals in its first two matches, both games of which ended in draws. The Germans predictably blasted Fiji 10-0 in the last of the group stage matches.

From there, Germany turned on the jets, blowing out Portugal 4-0 and Nigeria 2-0 to reach the Maracana.

Key Matchup

It's all about the Brazilian defense. When Brazil blew it in the World Cup, it was the defense which really was on the back foot the entire match. Of course, Thomas Muller, Mario Gotze and all of the rest aren't going to be on the pitch in this one, but that doesn't mean there isn't going to be a lot of pressure on the hosts.

Serge Gnabry and Nils Petersen have been tremendous all tournament long, and you just know they're going to be all over the place. Can Rodrigo Caio, Zeca and the rest of the men at the back really keep the scoreboard clean?

The pressure here is going to be immense for sure on Brazil, and we don't think it's going to get the job done in spite of the fact that most will expect that to be the case.

Neymar and his mates showed a lot of resiliency coming back from those first two really bad matches to excel, but if there is any hesitancy out of the men in the front of the line, this could become a game full of frustration.

The Germans have looked loose and haven't really had any problems putting the ball in the back of the net. What we're banking on is Brazil basically choking under the pressure of performing at the Maracana, and just as was the case in 2014, Germany should end up with the upper hand.

Olympics Odds: Germany 2, Brazil 0
