77th Golden Globe Awards Betting Preview

The Golden Globe Awards will kick off the 2020 award season by highlighting the best that film and television had to offer in 2019. The television bracket is more wide open than it has been in recent years with Game of Thrones coming to an end, and the film awards have been crashed by Netflix. Netflix is responsible for two of the three most nominated films in Marriage Story and The Irishman, proving that they can create excellent original content.

Golden Globe Awards Betting Odds

Which Film Will Win Best Motion Picture for a Drama?

The Irishman -170

Marriage Story +300

1917 +550

Joker +800

The Two Popes +1600

Martin Scorsese has been trying to develop The Irishman for years, and many critics believe it’s been worth the wait. This film has already been heralded as a masterpiece and among Scorsese’s best, so it’s the odds-on favorite to be named the best drama of the year.

Scorsese has been named Best Director three times by the Golden Globe Awards, and it’s a good bet that he’ll win the award this time too. The only film that could potentially top The Irishman in my eyes is 1917. I have a soft spot for war epics, and they generally do well at award shows since there is already a historic angle to use. The film was directed and produced by another favored son in Sam Mendes, and it was told to Mendes by his grandfather. That gives the film a little extra edge that could push it over the top.

Which Film Will Win Best Motion Picture for a Musical or Comedy?

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood -300

Jojo Rabbit +425

Knives Out +600

Dolemite is My Name +1300

Rocketman +2300

Everyone loves Quentin Tarantino, and he has won Best Picture at the Golden Globe Awards twice before this year. Pulp Fiction bested an incredible list of contenders in 1995 to give Tarantino his first award, and Django Unchained won in 2013 to make him a double winner.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the overwhelming favorite to make Tarantino a potential three-time winner, but don’t count out Knives Out. The clever murder mystery film kept audiences guessing throughout, and many were very happy with Rian Johnson’s most acclaimed film to date. This film was a hot topic during the holidays, and that could propel it to an upset win.

Who Will Win Best Actor in a Drama?

Joaquin Phoenix -500

Adam Driver +350

Antonio Banderas +1400

Jonathan Pryce +2200

Christian Bale +3200

This is the biggest lock on the board. Phoenix was phenomenal in Joker, and many are still raving about his performance. The villain has been a fan favorite for decades, and we saw both Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger earn awards for their reprisals of the character.

Adam Driver will eventually have his moment in the sun, but this isn’t the time for him, and everyone else is too much of a longshot. Phoenix was just too good as the Joker, and he’ll be rewarded.

Who Will Win Best Actress in a Drama?

Renee Zellweger -350

Scarlett Johansson +350

Charlize Theron +1000

Cynthia Erivo +1400

Saoirse Ronan +2000

This is the category to bet a longshot. The ‘Me Too’ movement has had a big impact in Hollywood, and that’s why we could see an upset. Although Renee Zellweger has been heralded for her performance as Judy Garland in the eponymous film, the three longshots with Golden Globe betting odds of over 10-1 have more value.

Theron played Megyn Kelly in Bombshell, Erivo played Harriet Tubman in Harriet, and Ronan played Jo in Little Women. All three performances have much more of a cultural impact nowadays than Judy Garland, and one of these three actresses is going to pull off the upset.
