Betting Recap

Mayweather opened up as a big favorite to win the fight, with odds of about 10-1, but money poured in on McGregor and the odds closed with Mayweather anywhere from a 5-1 to a 6-1 favorite. It was reported that sportsbooks took in about twice as much on Mayweather-McGregor than they did on the 2015 bout between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. Many sportsbooks said the fight was the biggest event outside of a Super Bowl.

While most of the money was wagered on McGregor, there were some big wagers made on Mayweather in the last couple of days before the fight. At least six wagers of $1 million were made on Mayweather. Despite those big wagers on Mayweather, sportsbooks badly needed Mayweather to win to avoid huge losses. About 90% of the overall wagers were on McGregor. The win by Mayweather was a windfall for sportsbooks, as it was the biggest win ever on a boxing match for the books.

Fight Recap

The early part of the fight had a lot of sportsbooks sweating bullets, as McGregor looked really good in the first three rounds. The tide started to turn at the end of the third round and it was almost all Mayweather the rest of the way. McGregor outlanded Mayweather in punches 51-40 in the first five rounds but Mayweather landed 130 punches the rest of the way compared to just 60 for McGregor.

The first round was a big one for McGregor, as he pushed Mayweather around and dominated the action. The second round was similar, with McGregor controlling most of the action, although McGregor didn’t really land many punches. McGregor was again the aggressor in the third round but it was already becoming obvious that the pace was becoming an issue for McGregor.

The fight turned in the fourth round when Mayweather started to get things going. He landed a few good shots and McGregor did very little. The fifth round is where McGregor really started to look tired and Mayweather started to land more punches. Mayweather continued to pound on McGregor in the sixth round with McGregor doing very little counter punching. The seventh round was all Mayweather, as he dominated the action.

McGregor made a minor comeback in the 8th round but it was brief, as most of the punches thrown by McGregor were to the back of Mayweather’s head. The 9th round was completely dominated by Mayweather, as he nearly ended the fight before the final bell. The fight ended in the 10th round, as Mayweather had a big flurry and the referee stepped in with 1:55 remaining in the round.

Mayweather said after the fight that he will not fight again, retiring with a perfect record of 50-0. "This is my last fight, ladies and gentleman. For sure, this is my last fight." Whether that statement ends up being true remains to be seen, as money can change things, especially when Mayweather made a reported $300 million for this fight.
