Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia Fight Preview

The first fight of 2024 for Alvarez has the potential to be a battle. Some boxing experts are predicting a close fight with Munguia being on the offensive and one of the hardest punchers in the sport. Over his career that includes 64 professional fights, Alvarez has seen it all and won’t be intimidated. One area that the champ excels in is defense avoiding punches with head and body movement and quick feet. He’s also exploited opponents who go on the offensive with strong counterpunches.

Alvarez climbed the ranks quickly earning a regional title in his 15th professional fight. He won the vacant WBC light middleweight strap with a unanimous decision over Matthew Hatton in 2011 and has been part of the title scene ever since. Alvarez suffered his first loss at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013 when he was thoroughly outboxed by his opponent. Alvarez worked his way back into contention for a fight with Miguel Cotto for the vacant WBC middleweight title in 2015.

In November 2021, Alvarez and Caleb Plant fought for the undisputed super middleweight titles. Using a combination of punches in the 11th round, Alvarez sent his opponent to the canvas prompting the fight to be stopped. Alvarez displayed his boxing acumen launching powerful punches to hurt Plant while also avoiding the heavy hitter’s replies.

A step up to light heavyweight for a tussle with Dmitry Bivol wasn’t the best move for Alvarez, who suffered his second pro defeat. Bivol scored the upset winning by UD with Alvarez moving back down to retain his belts with wins over Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder and most recently Jermell Charlo. All three of those bouts went the distance with Alvarez winning on every score card.

This is a tremendous opportunity for Munguia, who is six years younger than Alvarez with 21 fewer professional fights. He can also claim something Alvarez can’t. One common opponent was John Ryder, who Munguia dropped four times before getting the TKO win. Alvarez and Ryder tangled in May 2023 with Canelo winning by UD with no knockdowns. That shows us how powerful Munguia is and the style has been successful with a KO/win rate of 79 percent.

Bet Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia

With significant odds we’re likely to see Munguia get a lot of action as the fight night nears. His potential was on display recently in a dominant win over Ryder. And proving he’s not just a puncher, Munguia won a tactical unanimous decision over Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June 2023 to claim the vacant WBC Silver super middleweight title. His relentless offensive approach has served him well, but Munguia hasn’t seen an opponent like Alvarez, with quickness to avoid getting hit. Alvarez stated that he’s open to fighting the offensive style, but that’s probably gamesmanship. Alvarez is a crafty boxer known as a fierce counterpuncher. If Munguia fails to land heavy punches early he’ll get frustrated leaving himself open. And Alvarez will take advantage.
