Odds Analysis

The money on McGregor poured in from the moment the odds on this fight opened, with the odds going down to as low as Mayweather a -500 favorite. The odds drifted back up a little bit in the days before the fight, with Mayweather closing as about a -600 favorite. Sportsbooks were facing a huge loss if McGregor won the fight but since Mayweather came through with the win, it was a very profitable fight for the books.

The fight generated a huge handle at sportsbooks, making it the most bet fight in history. Early reports had double the amount of money bet on the fight as had been bet on the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight in 2015. There were reportedly six separate bets in Las Vegas of $1 million on Mayweather. Even with the big bets on Mayweather, sportsbooks badly needed a Mayweather win, considering over 80% of the bets made by the public were on McGregor. Most sportsbooks said the result couldn’t have been better for them, with Mayweather winning and the fight going over the rounds total of 8.5.

Fight Recap

Not many people thought McGregor could make the fight against Mayweather competitive but he did. McGregor actually won the first round on all three judge’s scorecards and he won the second and third rounds on one card. McGregor landed several good punches on Mayweather and after three rounds the momentum was clearly on the side of the challenger.

The fourth round was one of the best rounds of the fight, as both fighters had their moments but McGregor started to slow down at the end of the round. Mayweather started to turn the corner in the fifth round and continued his momentum in the sixth round, as McGregor continued to tire.

The seventh round was all Mayweather but McGregor made a comeback in the eighth round, as he appeared to get a second wind. That brief show of energy ended in round nine, as Mayweather pounded on McGregor. The round ended but it was obvious that McGregor was out of gas and it was only a matter of time before Mayweather would get the win. The fight ended at 1:05 of the tenth round, as the referee stepped in and stopped the fight, as McGregor was woozy.

“I think we gave the fans what they wanted to see.” Mayweather said after the fight. “I owed them for the Pacquiao fight. I had to come straight ahead and give the fans a show. That’s what I gave them.”

The fight was expected to generate more than $600 million in revenue from pay-per-view, ticket sales, sponsorships, etc. Mayweather was expected to make about $200 million from the fight, while McGregor should pull in about $100 million.

Fight Notes

Not everything came up roses for the Mayweather-McGregor fight, as Showtime had major problems with their pay-per-view feed. It was so bad that a class-action lawsuit was filed from customers unhappy with the feed. Many customers saw poor video, buffer problems and stalls, and some customers missed the first few rounds of the fight. The pay-per-view cost for the fight in HD was $99.99.

While many people shelled out the $99.99 for the pay-per-view, many others did not, as they found a way to see the fight for free by watching an illegally pirated stream. Estimates are that over 2.9 million people watched pirated streams of the fight.
