Punch Accuracy/Landed Props Breakdown

Even though Mayweather has far more boxing experience than McGregor he will have some disadvantages, as McGregor is younger, taller and he will have a two-inch advantage in terms of reach. It is also worth noting that McGregor is a southpaw and if there is one minor chink in the armor of Mayweather it is that he has struggled in his career against lefties. Zab Judah gave Mayweather trouble in the first few rounds of their fight, as Mayweather struggled to block the jab.

Mayweather is 49-0 in his career and is known as the best defensive fighter in boxing history. He simply doesn’t get touched that often. The interesting part of this fight is that both fighters have said they are going to be aggressive. McGregor is an offensive machine, as he throws a ton of punches and is surprisingly accurate. In his second fight against Nate Diaz he landed 164 out of 268 strikes for an accuracy percentage of 57.3%.

Oddsmakers rarely make big mistakes when setting the odds but it has been hard for them to set numbers on this fight because McGregor is not a pro boxer. The odds opened much higher on Mayweather than they are now. Mayweather opened as a -1100 favorite and that number is now down to -600. The punch accuracy numbers could see similar movement toward McGregor. The odds on the punch percentage props have moved slightly to the under on McGregor’s number of 15% and to the over on Mayweather’s number of 35%.

I am very surprised at the accuracy number for McGregor at just 15%. If Mayweather intended to fight a defensive fight then perhaps that number would be a good one, but all indications out of his camp is that he is going right at McGregor. That is a mistake, as the only way Mayweather can lose this fight is to get knocked out. An offensive strategy plays right into the hands of McGregor and gives him a chance. It also gives him an excellent chance to land more than 15% of his punches.

Oddsmakers are basing their number of 15% based on past Mayweather fights where he simply outboxed his opponents and used his defensive strategy. In the fight against Carlos Baldomir, in 11 of the 12 rounds, Baldomir landed just 12% of his punches while Mayweather connected 43% of the time.

In the Judah fight, Judah landed 18% of his punches, while Mayweather connected on 36% of his punches. Oscar De La Hoya connected on just 21% of his punches in his loss to Mayweather while Mayweather connected on 43%.

Mayweather is being given a lot of credit for his boxing ability which makes sense, but if this fight doesn’t go long, all of the Mayweather punch props are probably going to go under. If you are of the belief that this fight goes the distance then all of the punch props are likely to go over.
