Fight Breakdown

Quigley is coming off an impressive performance in his last bout, notching a first-round knockout of veteran Jorge Melendez on December 17. The win was his third of 2016, as he scored a unanimous decision over James De la Rosa in May and knocked out Freddy Lopez in March. Tapia will be his first fight this year.

“2017 is going to be a big year for me, and I can’t imagine a better way to kick it off than by headlining the first edition of ‘Golden Boy Boxing’ on ESPN. “Glen Tapia has faced some of the best in the middleweight and junior middleweight divisions, but I am excited to show a huge audience what I’m capable of in the ring.”

Tapia used to be a pretty good fighter, but his career is sinking after suffering two straight knockouts. In May 2015, he was upset by fringe contender Michael Soro. Then, the former prospect got starched by former champion David Lemieux a year later.

This will likely be a long night for Tapia, who is facing a legit blue chip prospect. The irony is that Tapia was once in Quigley’s position before failing against the top fighters in his class.

Boxing odds: Tapia to win at -600

Also on the card

In the co-feature, former world champion Randy Caballero (23-0, 14 KOs) will fight in his hometown in a 10-round tilt against veteran Jesus Ruiz (36-7-5, 25 KOs). It will be Caballero’s first fight in 13 months.
