Fight Preview

Saul Alvarez is 27 years of age and hails from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Best known as “Canelo” he has a career record of 49-1-2. Alvarez has scored 34 knockout wins and has never been knocked out. Canelo stands at 5’9” with a reach of 70.5” and fights from an orthodox stance. He is the top ranked middleweight in the world.

What is most ironic about Canelo is that he is most celebrated for the only fight he ever lost. On September 14, 2013 Alvarez stepped into the ring against the man that has never lost a fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr. In a scheduled 12 round bout Mayweather scored a 12 round MD win over Canelo at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Since that epic fight Alvarez has gone 7-0-1 in his last eight matches.

Prior to his draw against Golovkin, Canelo scored a 12 round unanimous decision win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The bout took place in May 6, 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Before that win Alvarez scored a ninth-round knockout win over Liam Smith on September 17, 2016 which was for the World Boxing Association World Super Welterweight title. Although Canelo was cut in his left eye by a second-round punch he was able to cut Smith’s right eye with a fifth-round punch as well as knocking him down in the seventh and eighth round. A body shot to Smith ended the bout in the ninth round. Canelo’s toughness showed in the fight as he suffered a fractured right thumb in the win.

Gennady Golovkin is 35 years of age and is a native of Karaganda, Kazakhstan that now resides in Los Angeles. Golovkin has a career record of 37-0-1 while compiling 33 knockouts for his career. Golovkin currently holds Middleweight title belts for the International Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, and International Boxing Federation. He is the second ranked middleweight in the world. Golovkin stands at 5’10.5” with a reach of 70” and fights from an orthodox stance.

Prior to his draw against Canelo, Golovkin scored a unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs on March 18, 2017 at Madison Square Garden in New York. With the win Golovkin successfully defended his IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBC World Middleweight titles. Jacobs was knocked down by Golovkin in the fourth round of the fight. Golovkin has held various world title belts since winning the WBA World Middleweight championship against Milton Nunez on August 14, 2010.
